We had more last year than we've had in years and years. There were hundreds lighting up constantly around our place, it was amazing and lasted for weeks.

Too much rain over the past couple weeks to see many. Hopefully, it dries up a bit for them soon. Too much rain, especially in the evening is rough on them.

if you want fireflies

1) leave your leaf litter on the ground, around trees is fine
2) stop spraying insecticides everywhere

fireflies are worth it

This year was the first time I've spent really looking up into the tops of trees for them. There is a species of firefly that is called the Spring Treetop Flasher that flashes earlier than all other firefly species. They'll be in the canopy of trees in the new Spring leaf growth. I made a point to look for them this Spring, and spotted a few.

Most others do their thing on or near the ground. The males flash mostly in flight and the females flash a fainter flash at them.

Of course, there is one species of firefly that is fully into trickery......using sex as a weapon. She can manipulate her flash to look like that of another species. She lures the poor, horny bastard in with deception and makes a meal of him. Nature really is metal.

What are fireflies?

Are they related to lightning bugs like we have in the south?

I live in Paint Rock Valley AL. They are always out in the warmer months. Blame it on the misquote sprayers of the world.

The overuse of pesticides (by farmers mostly) has almost wiped out insects of all types. Something like a 70% decline in the past 30 years.

Sitting on the banks of the Frio River in Leakey, TX tonight. Lightening bugs are crazy tonight. It’s the greenest I have seen in years here.

Last week I was on my front porch in Metairie (aka the land of milk and honey) and saw fireflies for the first time possibly *ever* in town.

As I'm sitting there marveling at them, the fricking mosquito spray guy comes roaring down the street. So much for that.

Which is a difficult choice for me.
I too enjoy fireflies and miss seeing them like when I was a child.
I absolutely loathe a frigging mosquito because I will attract and be bitten by every single one from an acre perimeter around me wherever I go.

as a kid, we would catch lightning bugs at my grandmama"s house and put them in mason jars punch a hole in them and use them as night lights

we still have a few blinking in the back yard, not like when I was young

Been seeing them for a few weeks here in Texas.

Don't blame it all on insecticides. Invasive fire ants play a big role in wiping out a lot of ground-dwelling species. A late freeze here in Texas rolled the fire ant population quite a bit this year, and I think it is a big reason we're seeing more of them now than we have in years. Normally I would have been nuking fire ant beds after every rain this year, but I have seen precious few to nuke, none at all after the last two big rains.
