Anybody know about Stem Cell treatment for the knee

Anyone up to speed on what options there are around stem cell treatment for the knees and who around New Orleans might be leading the pack?
My wife is about to turn 50 and after a lifetime of being active, her knee is pretty much bone on bone. She is currently getting the Euflexxa injections but they are remarkably painful and don't last long. She's tried Cortisone and it doesn't do anything.
She is basically looking at a total knee replacement or something else. I think the something else is Stem Cell treatment but I know nothing about this at all.
Can anyone shed some light? I know it's expensive but I'm willing to pay for it.
Help!

Is stem cell treatment really the more efficient option than a knee replacement? I know the replacement would be quite painful with a long recovery but wouldn't stem cell treatment take much longer?

Look into Dr. Kevin Darr on the northshore. Dude is amazing with the new trails

If you've ever seen a total knee replacement think shop class more than surgery. That is one ugly procedure. It involves cutting bone and so on. Total knee replacement is a path you can't come back from.
I think the Stem cell route doesn't have long term negative effects. If it does take longer I'm ok with that. If the technology gets better in 10 years you can still apply it. Once you get the knee replacement you've effectively eliminated that as an option.

It’s expensive for a reason and it should be illegal. I know people say the embryos will never be born anyway so it doesn’t matter but it’s still life. All this so you can play golf or tennis again?
Is it worth it?

Just for the record, if the stem cells originate from an embryo, fetus or baby, I'm out. It's not worth it and I find it reprehensible. There are several other sources other than an actual baby, fetus and so on.
Also, it's not so my wife can play tennis. It's so she can walk without pain.

Yes. We have enough people already

Had a family member, who is pretty wealthy, get stem cell treatments to their knee in Europe over the past few years. They were over there a few times for treatments, and I know it costs a lot of money, but was still cheaper to fly to Europe to have the procedure done.
Long story short...they just had double knee replacement at age 43. I am not sure all of the money spent on the stem cell therapy had any return.

This post got way off topic. The stem cells are from the bone of the person having the procedure completed. They drill holes into the bone and allow the stemcells to be drawn out of the holes. The stem cells will then seal the drilled out hole and begin growing new cartilage. Phase two of the surgery is taking samples of new cartilage, growing it in a lab, and then adding it back to the knee to help with cartilage population growth. It has nothing to do with a fetus. There is TONS of physical therapy involved and 2 surgeries. At her age I'd consider it though...you can always get a knee replacement when she gets old old.

The other forums I'm on won't let you outright insult someone. That was refreshing, thank you.

Doesn't work. There's a reason insurance doesn't pay for it in lieu of knee replacements. But, the doctors who push it will gladly take your money and then replace your knees later.

I had a Total Knee Replacement on my Rt Knee Nov. 2017.I'll turn 58 soon.
Mine was bone on bone. Finally it wouldn't straighten out.It quit working.
I'm 100% satisfied with my replacement. It's my good knee.
It introduced me to a new level of pain when I woke up after surgery.

On the OT you can tell someone to "go frick yourself you stupid cripple" even if they are crippled and in a wheelchair. Happens in some form or fashion every time OweO posts. It isn't a thin skin kinda place.

I agree with this at this time.
Most well done studies do not demonstrate any improvement over placebo.
Both stem cell and that prp really haven't done anything much at this time. People still try them. And pay for them.

The procedure or harvesting is Carticel if you want to google that. At least that is the one I am familiar with. If you are in the BR area some of the docs at BROC do it. They also do the replacement surgery robotically now and it is very precise. The new long acting pain meds for post op like Exparel and getting a nerve block are big improvements in post op recovery as well. Hope this helps.

Wasting your money. Different type of Stem cell treatments being pushed: bone marrow progenitor cells (stem cells from your own bone) and embryonic stem cells (stem cells from someone else embryo) are different options different providers will offer. While stem cells have some benefits in certain situations, using them for bone on bone osteoarthritis has zero long term proven research. Much like laser surgery was being pushed 10 years ago, you may get a short term temporary improvement but don’t expect long term results anywhere near knee replacement results.
