I have had several dogs over the years. Most are scared to one degree or another of bad weather, fireworks, etc.
While not a cure your vet can provide Acepromazine 'ace' or Sileo gel. They have proven to be fairly effective with most of my pack.
These medications are most effective if given 30 to 45 minutes before 'the event'. I find it also helps to keep the dog's activity level down once medicine is administered.
Good luck.

My lab hates it. He won't kennel and takes up residence in a hall bathroom until it is over
This is what mine does for storms and fireworks.

I keep mine outside so he can conquer his fears. And because he licks his own anus.

My vet gives me valium for my 13yo Chiweenie. I just got some today and gave him 5mg late morning. He’s chilled right now and it’s fairly heavy over the panhandle. Crazy but 5mg would put me to sleep but this little fricker’s metabolism is so high that it just settles him down.

Just asking because ACE used to be given out, I think they have moved to Valium & Trazadone
My parents dog takes Trazadone when it gets bad & it has helped tremendously

I've had dogs scared before, but this was another level. Before I got her, she was in a tornado. If I sneeze, she runs to the closet. By the time the second one hit, she had blood going everywhere.
The vet gave her some trazodon for the next time the storm hit.

We would know a storm was coming when our Aussie ran into the half bath and shut the door behind her.

That's what he gave her. The emergency vet last night wanted 600 dollars to come in the door. Then wanted to put her down. But she wasn't lethargic, just scared. Went to the vet in natchitoches and very reasonable.

Our red heeler does not care one bit about storms or fireworks. She is honestly the only dog I've had that does not react to sounds like that. Our english bulldog on the other hand, he'll run out in the middle of the night and look at the sky and bark at it during the storms or sit in his chair and bark at it.

We had to put her in the bathroom because of all the blood. Laid down some blankets and towels for her. She said nope. And jumped in the closet we keep towels in and got as far in the you could get. She's doing great now and happy. As soon as we got home, assholes across the street were doing fireworks. But didn't bother her. Guess the dope is working.

The dog, I was in the middle of Katrina working. These storms don't bother me at all
I did buy a brick home after Katrina though

Yep, and loud fireworks are worse.

Their hearing is a lot better than hours. If your wife is pregnant the dog can hear the baby's heartbeat. So thunder sounds a lot more harsh to them.
If it's a shelter dog it was a stray and was out in bad weather. That just adds to the anxiety.

Never been in a shelter. My son took it from a meth head that was starving it. The meth head kept it chained outside and it was in some bad storms. My son is a good kid that works hard and doesn't like to see animals mistreated. And the dog is high as a kite right now. Just had another storm move in and she is like what ever.
