Doing some work for a dentist right now, and I'm thinking having him pull every tooth out of my head would be preferable to dealing with him or his people any further.

I've done it before and I'll do it again. If you cost me more time/sanity than I'm worth, we're not going to do business any longer.

I understand that's not feasible in every industry though.

Actually what would suck is to not have a good enough product or service to be able to handle losing one shitty customer

Oh, we do that. Coming in we flat out tell them "you will be this valuable to us or we will no longer provide service to you." We drop them all the time.

Now there are some shitty valuable clients who ask just fricking horrible stuff to us and it sucks.

All the time. It's pretty rare, and of course it's never in a satisfying way.

pretty pompous way to start a business relationship, and it would be the end of the conversation/relationship for me

This, unfortunately. It's always been professional, even if an unprofessional approach would have felt better.

I'd rather pull a Don Draper and nail anything that moved at the office

No shite. I wouldn't even open my mouth, just turn around and walk out. I've done that before.

Fortunately I'm beyond the period of business to have to fire a client. I just simply pick and choose carefully whom I decide to do business with and at this stage of the game it's the one thing I'm actually good at.

Never mind, that's insane.

It's not pompous. It's a contract between large companies. We let them know that for the relationship to be profitable to us, they must meet certain requirements. Should they fail to meet those requirements, they will become unprofitable to us and we tell them they need to seek an organization more specialized in smaller clientele.

I've fired several clients.

Once it gets to that point, it's usually pretty satisfying.

Sad a couple of times though.

Not often but I've fired clients when they deserved it. I keep it professional but I make it clear we aren't going to be seeing each other anymore

Do it. Last week in a meeting the owner of our company brought up that we had fired as many pain in the arse customers this year as we had taken on new ones.
