See none of that sounds the slightest bit appealing to me. I like having my privacy and I don't trust others to not steal my stuff.
I like staying in a hotel and having the tv on in the room while I'm getting ready to go out for the evening. Like being able to sit on the bed in my underwear if I wish watching tv while I put my makeup up in the morning.

Just to be clear a lot of the hostels in Spain have private rooms. Not all though...

Poland. 1989.
It was the height of Batman mania, and a few of us went to Warsaw because that was the closest city where we could find a version in English. We had been on a nice tour group, and I was a freshman in college with a few buddies from a study abroad experience.
We made advance arrangements in Warsaw to stay at this one particular hostel that our tour group suggested because we would have to spend the night in Warsaw.
It was dank. It was dark, and I suggested that the three of us leave immediately to find a real hotel to stay at for the night. Somehow, I let them convince me to stay.
I refused to go to sleep. Stayed up the entire eight hours and 16 minutes we were there and left as soon as dawn broke to find a cab to get us the hell out of there.
The night that wouldn't end.
JK...Have never stayed in a hostel.

But do they have private rooms with a private bathroom and a decent tv with basic cable channels? And a clean bed that won't give you lice or bedbugs? And wifi?

I'm not a germaphobe at all.....but where have you been?
Bedbugs are a huge problem in hotels in some places.

I stayed in the Christian Youth hostel when I went to Amsterdam. It was the only one that had vacancies. They were pretty friendly until I told the Boudreaux and Thibodeaux "Heinelick Maneuver" joke. Then, they got kind of cold on me.

Well, I've stayed at a hostel in Jackson Hole for $20/night when the going rate for a hotel room was $200+ a night, if you could find a room at all. All I wanted was a place to sleep and take a shower, and it was more than adequate for that. If you're spending a lot of time in your room on vacation, you're doing it wrong anyway. IIRC they had lockers with combination locks for your valuables.
Maybe you get lowlife transients in some of those places, but I've never found it to be the case. That particular time, it was mostly backpackers/climbers, and cowboys in town for the rodeo. One guy was an architect from the west coast. He could well afford a room, but why? He was headed into the backcountry the next day anyway.

You were in Amsterdam staying at a religious hostel?

I have stayed in two hostels. One in Dublin and one in Barcelona. They were fine, nothing terribly bad. But after using airbnb I would never stay in a hostel again. You can get your own room for around the same price as a hostel in most cities.

Stayed at Balmers in Interlaken, Switzerland in 2009. It was the tits. Parties at the bar under the building every night, and large beer garden setup on grounds out back. Only downside was the drainage in the communal showers, which caused the shower water to perpetually stay ankle deep. Wear shower flip flops and make sure not to have any open wounds on your feet.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Expect a creepy old British guy to be sleeping above you. He looks like he has never once clipped his toe nails and his feet hand eight inches off the end of the bed. And he traveled to Madrid for the sole purpose of buying an entire duffle bag full of Marlboro Reds, cuz they are cheaper there. True story.

Did it the whole time I traveled in Thailand. The only time I was there was to shower and sleep so it worked out well.

I guess those would be suitable for a single guy traveling. But would you stay at a hostel with a GF or wife?
I don't spend a lot of time in my room either on vacations..,,but the time I am(sleeping, getting ready to go out, etc)....I want to be comfortable. I'd stay at an Econolodge or Super8 or Motel 6 before a hostel if I was that budget crunched.

I initially read that as 'vaccines' and thought it made pretty good sense.
