Anybody ever stayed in a Hostel before?

Looking to take a few trips this fall and winter on the cheap. Looks like a night's stay in a hostel ranges from $20-$40 depending on location. What can I realistically expect? TIA.

At any age I wouldn't do this without a backup.
I won't ever do this going forward.

One here in Lafayette. Blue Moon saloon is located in the back. Many "u-la-las" from France/Quebec stay there when coming to Cajun French area of La.

Stayed in one in Holland one time in 1992 but I was with a group. Wasn't a big deal. They had unisex bathrooms/showers too!

I've stayed in a few before, but it's been a few years.

I've stayed in a couple and there were few people there. Also, these weren't urban hostels. One was similar to staying at the home of a nice person you don't know, the other was closer to a tiny hotel in that it offered a little more and probably got more regular business. More akin to families that take in hikers like you see on some of the major trails than the euro style hostel, I think.

No thanks, I will never be that poor or that much of a dirty hippie to ever want to stay in a hostel.
OP....what are your thoughts on sharing a bathroom with a bunch of strangers?

I'll go to the bar part in the back... but would never stay in the hostel. Women who don't bathe, and who have hairy armpits and legs just don't do it for me...

I don't need to be trying to shave while some large E European gal is taking a growler.

They're fine. Just do research. Most of the hostels I stayed at in Europe were bars too so that can be nice. It can be odd staying with strangers. Like there was a couple that tried to frick with me still in the room on the top bunk and they were the bottom bunk.

Did a couple in Europe- Barcelona, Sevilla, Turino...
The one we stayed in Sevilla Spain was awesome. Rooftop patio, nightly parties with flamenco, Sangria, Aussie girls
Do your homework before you go, otherwise...

A bed, maybe in a private or double room, maybe a barracks type setup, it varies. A communal bathroom. Maybe a community TV and/or gameroom. It's an interesting way to travel, and you meet people. I have done it and would do it again.
