I look forward to going to work, cause I love what I do. When I'm home, I only want to be with my kids. Other than that, nothing really makes me happy. It sucks but 2 out of three ain't bad.

How long have you been at your job vs how long you’ve been feeling that way? I took a job 2 years ago that I thought was going to be GREAT! And throughout the 2 years, I told myself and others that it was a great job, even though I wasn’t sure myself- I had to reassure all my family and friends that I LOVED the job, but what I realized over 2 years was that it wasn’t the job for me, and the position wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. In January, I found out that the job was no longer an option. I went back to my old job, and since then, i’ve heard nothing but ‘you sound so much happier now’ and things like that. Maybe you’re trying to tell yourself and others that you’re in the right place and doing the but you don’t really believe it?
Could be just a slump, too, and things will change with time.

I’m hoping I’m not spiraling back down. The other times I have dealt with legitimate depression, I did not want to move from the couch. I felt so off mentally. I found absolutely no reason to smile. I could also pinpoint the episodes to events in my own life.
Right now, I can’t seem to do that. I haven’t found much reason to tune into my sports teams because they have been snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
I don’t hate my job, I just feel unmotivated. There are other people in my district who do what I do (teach), and their attitude and successes vary. I don’t teach a core curriculum class. I enjoy the students I have, and see progress with what we do, but I feel more strongly about the bigger picture. I just want these kids to grow up into decent human beings, productive members of society, successful people. I can’t obsess over our individual subject.
I don’t live to work, I work to live.
Unfortunately, I can’t find a current adventure to pull me out of this rut.

Are you the poster that lives in Saudi Arabia or some place Middle East?

Go to the gym. Find the meat heads. Ask where you can buy some testosterone.
Do something dangerous or at least primitive. Minimalist camping. Rock climbing. Be uncomfortably hot or cold for a while. Do something that provokes and urge to survive.

Read the book "Apathy and Other Small Victories".
It'll brighten your day.

Start taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes or some other martial art. It keeps you fit, has practical applications in the real world, and gives you goals to work for. I started 6 months ago with 0 martial arts background. I have competed twice at age 36, got my arse handed to me, but learned a lot and had a blast. It’s just something that has added a lot to an otherwise mundane life (my wife and kids also do it).

You live in the best time ever to be born and are richer, healthier, and more educated than billions who died before you. You live in the most powerful nation the world has ever known. You have a family and a job, both of which you got to choose. It is a myth that you are supposed to be euphoric at all times. Revel in what you have, which is substantial. ETA: I mean, seriously, think about the dead multitudes who never could have contemplated the joy of grilling on the back porch on land you own while sipping a 10 year old bourbon. We live in artificially cooled air. You can travel almost anywhere on earth for cheaper than anytime in history. Hell, I have already aged out of the draft and will never even experience the horror of real war. Life is objectively great. If postmodernism or politics or capitalism or whatever has you too down to enjoy it, there is always the option for early exit.
Bravo!

Adult life isn't as bad as our elders once told us...it's worse.

You're too young for that. Most feel this way in their 50's

Sure..then I realize that I’m incredibly fortunate to have the job that I do...book a flight for my wife and I to some place we’ve always dreamt of visiting, come back recharged after a week or so and attack life with a renewed focus.
what if you don't like your job (although i'm lucky to have it) and don't make enough money to go somewhere?
