Even this modern notion that looking at someone who is 17 years 364 days old in a sexual manner makes you a pedophile doesn't make sense.

Yeah. I had a friend who almost got in some big trouble for a 19 and 16 situation in high school because of an angry parent. That’s not right. There’s plenty of cases where that’s as simple as a senior and a sophomore dating. Idk the exact solution but that ain’t it.

My grandparents were 14 and 16 when they got married. Still married today, 76 years together. He’s 92 and she turns 90 in a few weeks.

Maw Maw and Paw Paw were 15 and 19.

Their parents were 14 and 9 and 16 and 8.

First kids weren't until woman was 19 for all.

Another thing to consider when looking at marriages from this long ago is they had a far shorter life expectancy. Even as late as the 1920s the life expectancy in the US was still only in the low 50s. And in the 19th century that number was in the 30s. It is true that these numbers are impacted by a far higher infant mortality rate then than now. But the bottom line is life was far shorter for most then than it is now.

Could you imagine showing up to the company Christmas party with your 9 year old wife?

“Hey, Tom, this is my wife Eunice. Alright honey, why don’t you go over there and play with the other kids for a little bit while I talk to Mr. Tom”.

I cannot understand why people who are speaking to third parties reference their parents by the names you refer to them.

Momma and dad went to the store. Brother said this. I’m holding baby.

It’s MY momma/mom and MY dad went to the store. My baby, my brother, etc.
I think it’s a hick thing not using “my”. Out of curiosity, what level of white trash are you? I need evidence for my theory.

Marrying a 9 y.o. is weird.

True but it was probably setup so they could spend the time until she could give birth building their life and preparing to have children...which of course involved building their own cabin, securing consistent work, gathering assets.

Totally different world then. I bet that girl was more mature at 13 than a lot of females are at 25 in 2020 when you consider she had to become a wife so young. Maybe more miserable too.

I'm not arguing for these customs, but I do think there are benefits to people not wasting their youth fricking around in relationships with no goal and getting married to someone who fits early on. I guess the length of the marriages will never be experienced again in the modern world.

And I'm sure maternal mortality rate played a role as well. A lot of families needed children to work the land, and child birth was dangerous business, so the woman had to be as healthy/fertile as possible and bear as many children as possible. The man had to be totally capable of taking care of everything while the woman focused on bearing children the earliest she could.

The OG duck Commander himself married his blushing bride when she was 16.

It hasn’t been that long ago.

It bothers me too. “Dad says she can’t come home anymore, and he means it’s. Maw just sits and keep her silence. Sister left ‘cause dad got violent...”

It’s not exclusively a “hick“ thing though. I’ve heard it from lots of people from all walks of life. Hell, the high-water mark of TD culture uses “Mother”.

Sell instead of sale is WT.

Loretta Lynn was married when she was 13 and had 4 kids by age 18. Then she started her career. She is truly an amazing woman for all she lived thru and how she became successful. They had a tumultuous marriage but were married 48 years.

Then there is the impact of Civil War pensions. Remember how recently the oldest living civil war widow died. LINK

And she had married the veteran at 21, her second husband.

A government pension was sure money, and that was hard to come by.

My grandma got pregnant at 16. She was my grandads secretary and he was in his 40s with a family. Creepy as hell but I’m here for it.

My drunken response “Well that’s really fricked up.” This pisses her off where she screams that that was the norm back in their day, and then I smart off again “Yeah, it was the norm in the days of Jesus, but not any time recently in this fricking country.” She proceeds to dog cuss and I figure I better get the hell out of there before this hillbilly tries to kick my arse.

The bartender was the one I was after, and I succeeded with her. Got a date to a beer fest later and it worked. So not too upset about it.
