I set mine to 71 during the day and it keeps up. 68 at night. I truly believe a frequent hose down of the unit helps immensely.

What was the temp outside at the time? Probably under 80. Maybe your A/C can cool it to 60 when it’s 100 outside, most certainly can’t come close.

it can. i can get it prolly down to 50 in my master bedroom and other smaller rooms that have their own unit. not sure what temp was yesterday but im in South LA and it was close to 100 yesterday during the day and i had it on 70 in that room and it wasnt even running. and my house faces E/W with lots of windows on the West side.

buts its mainly because i have a new house that is spray foamed and i sealed all the cracks before they did it.

I have 4 smaller units instead of just 2 large units (i have 2- 4 ton, 1-3ton and a 2 ton)

most houses are sealed like shite, insulated like shite, have shite turnover in the attic, have humidity problems inside the house and have no radiant barrier.

its to be expected.

Mine is now 3 years old and I'm not worried about it holding up, just what it's going to cost to keep the house cool this summer.

My bills last summer were $175 that I paid on June 1st, $279 that I paid July 1st, $267 that I paid Aug. 3rd, $314 that I paid Sept. 4th and then $247 on Oct. 4th before a dip when fall weather came into play.

You shouldn’t need to add Freon one can a year. You really shouldn’t need to add Freon ever.

I can get about 26 degrees of cooling capacity. Maybe I am oversized but I don't think so, 2300 living area and 5 ton in an old house (1950's). I run a portable in our bedroom that can bring it down to 60 when it is 100 out if I want.

My air is out. 26 years was a good run, though.

I had a 4 ton central unit installed back in 92 when I first bought the house I'm currently in. I didn't replace it until 3 years ago this past spring, so it lasted me 27 years and never had to have any refrigerant added in all that time.

It was still working when I replaced it, but real long in the tooth and I didn't want to chance it going out in the summer months.

1) to do spray foam correctly the walls need to be stripped to studs and the full cavity filled if using open cell, closed cell can be a little less. Actually to do correctly, you should caulk every seem before hand too.

We did a retro spray in on a 250+ year old farmhouse up in the Northeast. The property was on the historic registry and had we stripped it down to the studs it would have cost a fortune as it would have involved finding someone to do lath and plaster walls. Instead our contractor accessed all the cavities between the studs from the outside by removing a row of the cedar shake siding and drilling holes to spray it in. Areas under the windows were accessed from behind the baseboard from the inside. It obviously was nowhere near as efficient as it would be on a new build but it worked well.

2) roof has to be changed, cant have vents if doing spray foam

I've seen quite a few homes lately where the foam they spray on the roof from the interior is apparently intended to act more like a radiant heat barrier rather than actually insulate the attic. To me it would seem it wouldn't work very well or not be real cost-effective but who knows.

Good luck! I recently moved from NOLA to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Actually, I live about 10 miles east of the city in the "East Mountains" and the Cibola National Forest at about 7000 ft. I woke up with my bedroom windows cracked and a temp of 53 degrees. It's almost 11 AM and it is 69 degrees right now. The high will be in the 70s today.

I'm so happy to be out of Louisiana and that summer hellfire steam room that lasts for 6 or 7 months a year. Probably my number one reason for making this move.

I’ve actually been looking at Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Flagstaff, AZ.

There is something very appealing about the mild summer climates after living in the inferno of SLA my entire life.

Most houses in Santa Fe don’t even have AC units. Mind blown.

So I put window units in all of the windows that face my back yard for the next two weeks. With them running as well my central unit can actually cycle and not run constantly

Very smart of you

We had a heatwave here that lasted about 7 to 10 days. Temps were in the high 80s to low 90s. Finally had to run the AC but it still cooled down into the 50s or 60s at night. Even with the higher temps during the day there was almost always a breeze. Felt like maybe 80 or upper 70s in NOLA. Of course there was no humidity. It's usually about 10 degrees cooler up here than in Albuquerque during the days.

I wasn't aware that most houses in Santa Fe did not have air conditioning. That's crazy. Maybe I should have moved there.

I put Mitsubishi ductless in my house. I’ve got 5 separate wall units and only run 2 to cool the house. My house stays 68 and my light bill hasn’t been over $200 this summer.

My mind was blown. I’ll see some ductless units in a primary bedroom, but that’s about it. After investigating, it drops into the 50s every night, and those adobe homes in particular act like ice chests. They suck the cold in so when temps rise in the day time, the inside stays nice and cool even in mid to high 80s. Then when the house would start to warm up, sun goes down and temp drops to 50s starting the process over.

My ac unit cycles off for 10 min in Nola and I’m already sweating and cranky. Lol

It better hold up. Thing is only 3 years old. We have a little window unit in our room that I put on with the ceiling fan. Keeps it nice and cool in there but the rest of the house is warm and we keep our AC on 72. It is like it can't keep up.
