My shite could blow up any day if I'm honest. I was in Home Depot yesterday and did see they had a healthy stock of window units. I guess I'd have to survive on those until China could find it in their benevolent hearts to send me a new unit.

Who are some solid Residential HVAC vendors around BR/AP these days? It seems like my go-to’s have all retired or sold.

It’s always a good idea to have a window unit on standby. Even a small unit will make a world of difference in a pinch. I got a small one for like $50 a few years ago and it has bailed me out a few times.

About the dryness of New Mexico, going over to Palm Springs etc.

A friend in Palm Desert said the best thing about moving there was his dogs no longer had flea problems. The heat combined with the dryness meant the fleas that didn't die of thirst died of the flea equivalence of heat stroke.

Exactly. The outside temperature is largely irrelevant as an AC is a closed system and it cools and recirculates the air from inside the house, not the outside air.

Your home’s level of insulation makes the outside temp further irrelevant.

having a backup window unit for your bedroom is choice, if you have AC issues pop it in the window while you are working on it, if you lose power and have a generator you can get by until power comes back

It’s not going to cool the house more than 20 degrees from outside, probably less.

This is absolutely not true. My house is staying at 70 degrees even at the hottest part of the day here in Hammond. It’s also cycling like it’s supposed to. Now I stay on top of keeping my unit clean. I clean the outside unit every two months in the summer and I also oil the outside fan motor to prolong the life of the bearings in it. As far as the inside unit I inspect it before it gets ridiculously hot in the attic. Also you should pour clorox down the upstairs unit ro keep algae from plugging it up. I also have my spare capacitor just in case

$19k for Trane 16seer

That was pre-summer

Don’t believe the low ball estimates

My unit is a ton bigger than the house needs. It keeps the house cool and cuts off regularly like it should. I think the duct going to one of my daughters room may have a leak in the attic. I need to get up there one morning to check it.
We keep the house at 73/74 during the day and 62 at night.

Hey when I’m wrong I’m wrong. I had always heard the “20 degree” thing and had experienced it myself both in my current home and former home. However, this summer my ac is new and today I was able to keep it a cool 70 in the house, despite the outside temp being 97.

I think he's confused on which air it cools up to 20 degrees. Your vents should be blowing anywhere from 55-60 degrees. That's where that 20 degrees comes into play

The AC in our office has been out since Friday and just came back on. I was the only one here today except for the AC guys. I'll accept sweating a little in exchange for peace and quiet.

Seems like I was. I never wanted to overwork the unit (is that possible) and as such always set it about 20 degrees below the outside high on very hot days. Today I didn’t and it kept it 27 degrees colder than outside and cycled on and off. Thanks OT, it’s a whole new level of comfort in my house.

I have a tank of freon if I need it. Figured it was worth the $200 to buy it since it would cost that much to come out. I have the scale and the gauges already.
I just nitrogen purge them when done.

I have a spare capacitor and contactor.

Last year my fan control board burnt up. I was able to bypass the fan control using a 24v two pole contactor.

I fixed that (heater wouldn't run without control so I had to fix it)

I was going to swap out my sealed system them
This winter but the storm fricked prices and they been bad since.

#1 thing that will happen in this heat is your coils will ice up.
If you hear your inside fan see your compressor running(fan) and have no cool. Likely your coils are iced over.

Running your fan will melt the ice. As will running heat.

This issue is caused by dirty coils or low freon.

If your outside fan stops. The capacitor is a $10 part at any appliance shop. You need to know your microfarad rating and voltage. Some have three connections and two microfarads. Such as 50mf 370v. Or 60+5mf 370v (voltage will be higher than input. So above 220v) just match it up.

This is a highly common fail point. I know people who fix ACs stay busy and never ever ever change out systems. 90% of their work is capacitors, fans and the like. The problem is most people in the industry want to sell your a system. They don't want to fix your stuff. They convince you you need new "they ain't going to make that freon no more". I hate that BS. I can still get R12 and it hasn't been made since 1996.

Best thing anyone can do is go spray their outside coils. Make sure nothing is around it.
