There are things you can do with a one time expenditure of $$$.

If you have windows facing west and south, put exterior screens made of 80% shade cloth on them.
Add black out cloth liners to window treatments.

Just keeping the sunlight out will make a difference.

If you have the option, cook in the early morning. That's why in the South, the main meal was mid day in the summer, so that the kitchen wouldn't heat the house evenmore in the late afternoon. (Either that or do siestas in the heat of the afternoon and dinner around 9pm. )

Prepared to sit in warmer temps inside, thermostat is higher and not wearing much besides gym shorts and tank tops. Definitely not going to try to push the ac during the day. At night that thing will be set at 50º

I don’t know how people aren’t comfortable with keeping it at 74-75 during peak sun then lowering to 71-72 at night. Keeping it on 69 all day long puts too much demand on the unit on days like this

Ours stays on 73 during the day and 70 at night.

We got the windows tinted on our house 2 yrs ago and it dropped the AC bill by $30/mo

The only leak is when they don't seal it properly to assure getting repeat business.

When my new systems were installed last year, I was told this really isn't a thing if the systems are in good working order. They like to run.

Already spent $260 on a Friggen capacitor. Worse part is I’m an electrician but was in training.
This is prime time for HVAC companies. Have a buddy that works on it and when it gets hot they know almost exactly what goes out on each unit. They keep the van stocked and get in and out in ten minutes. The guy we used went straight to the capacitor and was out in ten minutes flat.

FTR No way I was coming home to an hot, angry wife after a long day. Worth every penny.

Not me. I'll just have the harem fill their mouths with ice and blow on me.

Its worth going out to clean your outdoor coils after that saharan dust last week. That stuff can gunk up the radiator fins.

This. It is especially true if you have pets that can get around the unit. You'd be surprised how much pet hair can get trapped on those fins.

Oh, and when hosing them off, be sure to not use too hard a water stream and go at the fins head on, not on an angle since they are so easy to bend.

If it is really dirty, they make a coil spray that does a pretty good job of cleaning the fins without having to take the unit apart to get to them with a stiff nylon bristle brush to remove built on gunk.

I had an A/c just like that. One can a year. You may make it through the summer, be optimistic!

Just to put it in perspective, I’m an electrician at a power generating plant and they are is a PSA right now.

They keep unnecessary lights and other unnecessary loads offline because of the public load.

This is what they told me with my unit. I cannot get it below 76 degrees during the day. And I can get it to 72 during the night.

But it doesnt stop running.
My system might be 6 years old.

Wish they would have sized it bigger. It does cool the house but it cant get it cold cold.

I couldn't live that way.

I have a feeling this is the case in the house we are preparing to move into, and I am dreading dealing with it. Our unit actually has to have an accelerator hooked up to it (you typically only see this in commercial buildings). The new accelerator came in this week, so we shall see..

A lot of national builders will undersize ACs for our climate. My first house was like this. It had a 2.5 ton which it was barely under the sq footage for but it also had no shade and couldn't cool the house below about 77 on really hot days.

It will in some cases. Our house is right at 2400 sq feet and we have a 5 ton Trane. It was 71 all day yesterday in my house despite it being like 98 outside.
