Any ideas on how (if it is even possible) to make my pulleys hang down instead of inward due to the tension?

A few options:

1) don't let them hang, get a rigid connection
2) release the tension
3) sorcery (this is the only way to have them hang and maintain the tension, it'll also impress women)

Not true. She could run wires from the outside of the pulleys and attach to each wall with tension. Whats a few more wires and holes, it's a rental.

Meh, I put that under option one, holding the pulleys in position with an opposing force.

Has the OP considered the cleansing power of flame? Burn it all to the ground and never worry about pulleys again.

Don't lie. You wanted to take tension off by dropping that hideous lightcage thing to the ground and watch it break.

From the question you asked, you would have been in real trouble surviving pre-Al Gore.....

It's a pulley. It will hang vertically once it has an equal amount of downward force on both sides.

1. Find some rocks and a bag to hold them in.

2. Fasten the bag so that it pulls down on the cable on the side opposite the fixture.

3. Add rocks until the pulley hangs vertically.

4. Leave the bag with rocks up permanently. That setup looks shitty anyways.

Bro that's fricking retarded. The only horizontal force at all is coming from the cable so it's always going to lean. You can add enough rocks to where the difference isn't noticeable but it will always be off from 90 degrees.

Good idea. Plus the rocks will add to the rustic look he's going for.

Take a small cable or rope and use it to hang the light from the hook, this will remove all but the wire weight from pulleys allowing them to hang straight.
