I'd just get rid of the pullies and run the cord through some conduit that matches the ceiling and wall down to the outlet.

From the second pic you showed, ceilings look too low for such large hanging light fixture IMO.

Too much IMO.
If you're looking for some light features, try adding some larger vertical facing light fixtures. I believe you have one to the right of your fireplace. Get a couple larger, more ornate cast iron ones and put them in the corners.

I probably won't be removing it as I likely wont be living here this time next year. And the light by the fireplace is being tossed. It's broken.

The ones I've seen include a counter weight system so the pulleys don't carry so much tension.

that would work, or he could jack up one side of the house and you wouldn't have to have rope going from floor to ceiling

Run a wire straight down thru the ceiling. Why mess with the pulley system at all (unless you like that look).
