This story was the GOAT episode of City Confidential

In that show they said everyone in the tavern claimed to be hiding under the pool table when the shots were fired

McElroy fathered more than 10 children with different women. He met his last wife, Trena McCloud (1957–2012), when she was 12 years old and in eighth grade. He raped McCloud repeatedly. The 12-year-old's parents initially opposed the relationship, but after McElroy burned their house down and shot the family dog, they relented and agreed to the marriage.[5] She became pregnant when she was fourteen, dropped out of school in the ninth grade, and went to live with McElroy and his second wife Alice. McElroy divorced Alice and married Trena in order to escape charges of statutory rape, to which she was the only witness. Sixteen days after Trena gave birth, both she and Alice fled to Trena's mother's and stepfather's house. According to court records, McElroy tracked them down and brought them back. He then returned to Trena's parents' home when they were away and, once again, shot the family dog and burned the house down.[6]

Damn.

I don't think that this is the same Ken McElroy referred to in this story.

Have family not too far from there and am somewhat familiar with the story. Sounds like they have some big pool tables in that town.

Without going down a rabbit hole on this, I'm guessing the guy mostly swam in an ocean of people on the fringe of society, who the authorities didn't care much about and/or had their own reasons for not getting the law involved. It's hard to visualize him trying to intimidate a local doctor, lawyer, or banker and getting away with it. Predators have a keenly developed sense of who they can and cannot prey on.

So he burned down the parents house and shot the dog twice? In a matter of what, three years?

I remember reading about this in Rolling Stone back in the day. The impression I got was that were way more than two shooters.
