Have always had one of our garden beds filled with rock since we moved in. Started moving some of them around today to make way for an eventual goldfish pond. Found this big rock in the mix. Thinking its graphite but I have no clue what I'm looking at

Hoping someone here has more expertise in the field. And before yall ask what I'm doing up at 1am wondering about rocks in my yard, this stay-at-home stuff is really screwing my sleep patterns

Looks like slag to me.
Have you held a magnet up to it?

A local Gem and Mineral enthusiast group has a show in my area around Fort Polk about twice a year. It's fun to see some rocks. I don't know what your rock is.

PS There's usually this club of enthusiasts at this show who make Stone Age flint tools and arrowheads. Very interesting, but, I have no need for flint tools -- YET.

Google basalt. Put a torch to it and see if it burns, exercise caution . Does it put a streak on concrete? If you wipe it with a gasoline rag, does it dissolve? So many questions.
