Any of you know of or have worked at the Exxon Mobil Baton Rouge refinery?

Is it as much of a meat grinder as it is rumored to be? Is the culture as cutthroat as Ive heard? Are 50-60 hour work weeks the norm?

I’ve bought their gas a time or two. That’s all I got

I know a few guys who are operators out there, but I’ve never talked to them about those things.

When I was a kid in the 70’s and 80’s, my step-father lived a block off of Hollywood Street in NBR. The refinery smells gave me headaches almost every other visit to my mom and step-Dads residence. My head would pound and I lived on BC powders.

Got a tar ball from their tanker Exxon Valdez.
B-I-L was up there to protect beach cleaners from bears and other critters.

In the early 70's when I graduated from LSU chem engraving, Exxon was known to be very aggressive with people management

Yes. To sum up employment there-it is a shitty job with good insurance. You can work as much as you’d like or work when you don’t want to work (more common with forced overtime). Great benefits. shite leadership from the plant manager all the way down to the STLs. If you’re white-embrace the DEI promotions and all of the bullshite “clubs” they have to force diversity down your throat. Expect to pull more weight for the minority employees as they aren’t really capable of pulling their own. The equipment is old and has not been maintained. What is replaced on turnaround doesn’t last. If you kiss arse really well-you’ll fit right in. Just my experience.

You just described every plant/contractor job that I’m aware of.

I get that. But at the double cross-it truly is the only way to climb the ladder.

Pretty much every job anywhere ever.

I work in the chem plant so can’t speak for the refinery. Your OT is gonna strictly depend on the unit you go to and how well it’s staffed. I agree with everything one of the guys mentioned above. Upper management is relentless with justifying their jobs by head hunting. They’ve got people scared to do LOTO because of the safety audits we go through. And then they preach safety, but will rush results and nail you to the cross if you make a mistake. The money is worth the headache, but sometimes I question my sanity.

I'm an entitled millennial, haha, but work life balance is my number one in priorities. I've always heard the money is great, but if you have to work a bunch of extra hours, then your hourly rate is more on par with other jobs. From what I hear they don't pay overtime but instead give you comp time. Only problem is, I hear you never have an opportunity to use it.

I don’t know who you are talking to..if you are hired as an operator-you make overtime. You will be a represented employee and will make the agreed upon wage with the labor contract. As to your “life work balance”-throw that out the window. You agree to work at the double cross-your life will be what they dictate. The only guaranteed time off is scheduled vacation- and I’ve seen that canceled due to people calling in. You want that XOM dollar-you have to pay that price.

I'm more speaking towards the engineering side

I interviewed there a couple years ago. I was warned by people that have worked there in the past. Thankfully I backed out. It sounds like a terrible place to work.

I worked operations. The only thing I know about the engineering side is most of the time-their education level far exceeded their level of intelligence. I worked with a few that were worth their salt-but most are diversity hires. That’s the truth.

Is this supposed to be a lot?

Engineering?? shite you’ll move up the corporate ladder quick as hell. You basically have no choice but to be promoted as an engineer. You’ll move on from a contact to a second line supervisor before you know it. And then it’s on to Houston.

I didn't do tar or animal cleanup, but I did get a souvenir.

I’m not knocking this, fully support it. My comment here is to say that I don’t know how offshore and plant leadership is going to staff at the technician level. Younger people just aren’t eating this “work you to death” shite.
