The kid got this offer along with his scholarships (subtle brag), but the link it sent us to doesn’t give much info. What kind of work is this? Is this research oriented work in your department? Sweeping floors? Working in the bookstore? Raking leaves? Pay seems kind of low for it to be real work. Obviously if it’s like a research deal that benefits your resume while you pick up a few token bucks toward tuition along the way, it’s something to consider. But I’m hesitatnt to recommend to my kid that he give up 20 hrs./wk. of study time if money isn’t really an issue (subtle brag). And that’s what you kids do all week - at least 20hrs. of studying, right?

ETA: He’ll be at LSU for mechanical engineering. I hear freshman year is basically a weeding-out process, so I don’t want him losing study time unnecessarily.

Work-study kids can perform a variety of roles so it really depends on the department they are assigned.

Most are simple clerical helpers though.

Those that prove their reliability over the years will be assigned tasks with higher responsibilities.

The pay stays terrible though and is usually not worth it.

Pearl River Community College can't be that expensive, can it? How much does his scholarships cover?

The money is crap, but it’s a good way to get to know the higher ups at the university. If the kid has any desire to go into academia, it’s a great job.

I did it in college

First semester I built fish tanks with the biology department. Was pretty cool. Then they decided they had too many workers and I had to find another department

the rest of college i was an office worker in the student government office

Just student worker type stuff. Like working in the office of the business college filing papers answering phones, etc. FWIW, it's really flexible so if your kid has a test or whatever they'll let you work 10 hours that week. Overall, if you're willing to pay for everything it's probably not worth it. If you want him/her to have pocket/beer money. It's an easy flexible gig for a new college student.

They pay is terrible, but it's super convenient. It's hard to beat being able to just walk and work for an hour or so in between classes throughout the day and have the flexibility take time off to study/do schoolwork, etc.

The jobs vary a lot by department, but I had some friends that got to work on some pretty cool research projects.

From a father who misspelled "tiger" to an undergrad in ME - that's quite the intellectual leap.

It's potentially a decent way to meet co-eds as well.

I mean if money isn't a problem then I really don't see why he should do it. If you want him to have experience for his resume just get him to find summer internships in the field he's interested in.

Have him request a computer lab job where he will do bare minimum and can get paid to study/do homework.

I recommend the CxC Communication studio if that's still a thing. He will benefit from the presentation skills workshops, 3-d printer, and other technologies.

Depends on where he gets assigned. I never had anything to do at mine so I just studied when I was at work.

And by studied, I mean dicked around on TD

If he is living on campus it's absolutely worth it

FWIW. Kids working in college (or working at all these days) is pretty rare. Which makes it a nice addition to the post - graduation resume.

I like a kid who was able to get through school and hold down a work schedule at the same time. I don't care if he was flipping burgers or building skyscrapers. It lets me know he wasn't committed to playing video games and fricking off every moment he wasn't in class.

Yeah I’ve tried to read all the engineering threads on here over the years, so I’ve picked up on the importance of internships. So if this deal was something like an internship, I’d push him towards it. But if it’s nothing like that, I’d rather him have that time free. He’ll have enough pocket money that he has earned on his own already.

No it's not. I'd bet more work now than ever. You can't afford to go to college anymore without working

I did it. You have a lot of downtime to work on homework and projects, plus it gives you exposure to professors and fellow students that you otherwise wouldn't have had, as they typically place you in your major's department. I enjoyed it, and it gave me some pocket money. It also looks good on a resume and provides you with something to talk about in interviews without interfering with your work like a more hectic side job might.

I worked in the Finance department until I switched to engineering, then worked in the MIE department. Both great experiences.

They used to separate it into one category for work study and another for higher achieving students were guaranteed research jobs. I looked into it just now and apparently that’s no longer the case. Your kid can go to the engineering department and request a job with his “presidents student aid”. If he does it BEFORE school starts and requests a research job (good for his resume to help him get internships), he should be able to get one. Week before school starts tell him to go find the engineering department guidance counselors and they can help him

TggrDad, this is good experience towards an internship. Most engineering kids do well their first year or so til the real weed out classes (thermos for ME kids sophomore year). So having research work experience will give him a leg up on getting an internship for the summer between his sophomore and junior year. He won’t have any more than 20 hours per week, and honestly it was a real stretch for me or any of my friends in it to put up more than 10-15 per week. A bit of work every week is good to get him experience and a good contact in the engineering department

Well frick me.

I don't know how I survived working full time while in school.
