I'm sure Belgians are great dogs, I've never had one. I have a 4 year old German Shepherd and he's the best dog I've ever had. Loyal as can be and protective. Freakishly athletic, great with other people and pets as long as they're introduced first.

They're smart as hell, love to play and need companionship with their owners. In the summer when kids are in the pool throwing a ball around, he will try to get the ball for hours rarely taking a break no matter how hot it is. The funny thing is, he won't get in the pool. Only gets in the pool when he falls in. I love him to death.

A Kane Corso is also badass. I’ve only been around one and it was trained as a guard dog. Very intimidating looking and capable from what I was told. I’m sure almost any dog would work in your situation. Most urban criminals seem to have a fear of all dogs.

Belgian Malanois..better than all the listed dogs combined

It’s probably already been said, but as awesome as these are they take a ton of work. Super smart and very active. If trained then fantastic dog, not trained can be a nightmare.

Boxers aren’t bad as well. Strong and goofy but great with kids. Plus everybody thinks they are pits so they shy away from getting too close lol.

Had an Akita that we rescued. Beautiful animal. Shed like a mofo. Didn't bark. but if she went into her Akita growl, you better pay attention because something is up. She was pretty imposing.

If you want a more laid back breed maybe consider bull mastiff or one of the various other mastiff breeds. They can be stubborn and take longer to train but don't require as much exercise (also have very intimidating barks)

Ummm, white boxers specifically are predisposed to congenital deafness.

That probably makes for a really shitty guard dog.

15 Years ago, my neighbor bought a Rott. From day one I would go to the fence and talk sweet to him and pet him. As a result, he was always friendly to me and wagged that stubby little tail when he saw me. However, when a thunderstorm would come as they tend to do in Louisiana, that Rott was having none of it! It would run around the back yard during storms barking at the lightning and thunder..

Rott would chase the storm away without fail!!

Should solve for the real issue- MOVE! I live in this hellhole as well and will be gone within a few months for good. Hope you have standby generator or battery powered security as the recent home-breakins are with thieves pulling the meters and disconnecting generators.

THIS. I moved out of Alexandria to the FH area in 2018 and I've not looked back. Best decision I ever made. Got great neighbors and little to no crime where I live at. It is also quiet at night which is my favorite feature of living out in the country.

Post Edit: Deleted my comment after reading you wanted a dog to live outside mostly. You will never create the necessary bond with a potentially dangerous animal if that is your approach to ownership. Recommend security system, not a dog.

Me too. That dog waited 10 years for my son in law to drop his guard. The second he did he was screaming in pain with Big AL latched onto his ankle

We had a Chow that could break a chain, and would rip the face off anyone who was not in the immediate family.

English mastiff. I have a brindle one. Scary looking bad bark . But really sweet.

With property crime getting absurd in Alexandria, La

My sister's house was 1 of the 2 they tried to hit 2 nights ago by killing the power. They just moved to Alexandria over the summer. I strongly recommended to not buy a house in Alex and suggested Pineville or Woodworth. They bought a really nice house in a great neighborhood I guess thinking they would be safe. I knew better.

Now I'm trying to get her to buy a bad arse dog too. No luck with that so far either.

We have two Dogo Argentinos that are awesome. Great with the family, and friends. You have to train them early, but are very protective, especially of my daughters when strangers are around.

Not many dogs out there that look more intimidating, and pound for pound I’ve never come across a stronger dog.

This is rather surprising. Our two German Shepherds won't get out of the pool unless we make them. Both are more comfortable in the water than out of it and both can swim vertical (very cool). The younger one will stand on the bottom like a human.
