Never loan money to family or friends. Give what you can afford to never get back. let them know it is theirs with no strings attached.

Then, if she defaults on the loan, you could sue her in small claims court for breach of contract.

Suing someone who can't afford to pay you back will only cost you more money.

I have loaned to family but I never expect repayment. And I will not loan money a second time unless the first loan is repaid.

Yep. When you make the decision to loan family/friends money you have to also make the decision to be at peace with not getting that money back. If you can't do that, don't loan them the money.

This is it.

I've "loaned" a lot of money in my day. I've done it once with the expectation that it'd be paid back. Everytime thereafter has been a gift. If it comes back, cool. If not, cool. I don't loan money to people I wouldn't give everything to anyway.

You never loan money to a family member, just give it to them … if you want to.

People file pro se suits in small claims court all the time. What it costs you is time and up front court costs/fees, but you can recover those costs/fees.

What you can't recover is the lost time and relationship damage.

And as another poster mentioned, if you obtain a favorable judgment, you can seek a writ of garnishment to seize a portion of the debtor's wages.

No. Had a friend whose electric bill I paid once but I didn't expect to get it back. She wasn't good with money.

for me to ask a family member for money it would have to be literally life or death. That goes for my good friends too. Actually, I think I would rather just die.

Dental work?You freaking kidding me?

Why would your fiance agree to something like that? Unless it’s life saving then absolutely not. Y'all gonna buy her implants next?

No. I learned a lesson very early in life to never loan money to people. If I feel compelled to loan someone cash I will simply give it as a gift and never expect money back.

Your sister in law needs to apply for financing or see a cheaper dentist. Asking for a $9K loan here is embarrassing. If you 'lend' her this money, you will end up giving her WAY more than $9K over the long haul.

Not since I adopted the rules from "A Bronx Tale".

I will loan someone $20. If they repay the loan they can be trusted with more.

If not I got them out of my life for $20 bucks.

Neither of us like or trust our families to loan or give them money.

I look at like this; it’s never a “loan”. I’ve given a friend $3k and another $1,500. Probably $7,500 to a cousin that just finished a 29 year stint in prison. Paid that during his incarceration. Nothing now.

I give it never expecting to get it back but there’s a bottom to the well. I make that clear. When we hit that bottom - abd we did, it’s always no more money but I’ll buy you food and medicine if you need it. I figure the $20 to get rid of a problem is just adjusted for inflation. That said, your SIL teefs might be a game changer for her - if so, I’d pay the dentist directly on that deal. Get receipts.

Of course. My brother a ton and my parents. All of them horrible with money. I give it, let them do their pitch of I’ll pay you back, say no problem, then forget about it cause I’m never seeing that money again.

Excuse us Mr Rockefeller, we thought it was “fiancée”.

Pics of her?

She’s not wise, she better be hot and bawdy.

This decision is a precedent for you as a couple.

You better navigate wisely.
