re: Any non-hunters here? I've literally never been hunting.

This thread is interesting to me. I've hunted and fished for food my whole life. My family eats wild game animals/fish 4 times a week year round. One of my first memories is my dad/brother skinning rabbits.
I have pictures of me with fish and have mounted fish in my home. For some reason I have never taken a picture of a dead mammal or had one mounted. There is just a difference in my mind between animals and fish. I have no problem sharing a fishing picture but would feel ashamed sharing a picture of me standing over a dead deer smiling like a jack arse.
I enjoy catching fish with a laugh and smile but dont enjoy killing mammals. I mean, I am proud to bring home the meat but I still don't enjoy the actual act of killing them.

Didn't hunt as a kid, fished a lot. Took up deer hunting as a teen with some relatives but stopped when I went to college (combo of F cold weather and I can't sit still that long and I fathered chasing two legged deer). Continued fishing throughout my 20's and am now trying to break into duck hunting in my mid 30's. I like that it's more of a social hunt (sit in a blind with a friend, talk, more action). I certainly couldn't sit in a deer stand for hours on end weekends on end hoping to maybe shoot 2-3 times a year.

Never been hunting either. Money was tight growing up, so buying things for leisure wasn't in the cards and my dad wasn't really the outdoors type either. If someone invited me, would definitely do it though. However, spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on gun and ammo just seems like a waste to me. If that is your thing, cool, but probably wouldn't get into it.

Fyi, you don't have to spend stupid money to go hunting. I always look at the cost/production of hunting and fishing so I come out on top. I still use passed down guns that work just fine. My main rifle and shotgun I got 30 years ago.
I just shake my head when I see someone spend 10k to get $200 in meat and then spend $200 to have it processed. Gotta have scent lock clothes, special soap and a lot of other junk. I just walk out the door in normal clothes and likely do better then they do.

Never hunted. My Dad was never much of a sportsman type. Went fishing a bunch of times with friends growing up. I'm not very knowledgeable about it, but I do enjoy it. Was offered to go hunting a couple times with some extended family when I was a little older. Was interested just for the sake of the experience but never got around to setting it up.

Me.
Family loves to hunt. I’m just not into it. Would much rather sit in the marsh with an ice of beer trying to catch a big Red than sitting in a deer stand or duck blind.

That would never work for me. Hell I spend more on alcohol to go to the camp for the weekend than the meat would cost.

I have no interest in hunting, nothing about sitting in the woods, in the cold, to shoot an animal with a high powered rifle or bow screams excitement to me.
However, if people find it fun, then well it doesn't bother me. Just not my thing.

Ron White summed up my opinion about hunting perfectly:
"It's really early in the morning, it's fricking cold outside...I don't want to go"

Ok, I'll be honest. I have never figured in the cost of alcohol. That is a typical expense that does not factor into hunting/fishing.
I am stupid anal about making sure it does not cost more to acquire the meat than the meat would cost in a store. My boat was a family gift from 1989 and my favorite fishing reel is a shimano from the 90's lol. I could afford new stuff but then the meat would cost too much so I don't do it.

Non-hunter checking in. The whole thing bores me to death, can't sit there freezing and quiet all day. Also, the way I see people "hunt" today is more farming than anything. Setting up a clear-cut and a food plot to lure them in until one big enough you want to shoot comes wandering in does not fit the definition of hunting.

I grew up hunting a lot with my dad and grandfather.. As I've gotten older its just not thrilling to me any more. I don't like waking up early, it's normally miserable weather and I'm no longer mad at the animals.

This is just a generally foolish way to look at it. Do you spend any money on things that are wasteful (entertainment, vacation, etc)? I don't know if anyone in 2018 is hunting as their only source or way of putting meat on the table. People do it for enjoyment. You don't have to like it or do it yourself but some people do.

I’m the same way OP. I like to be out in the woods and have game cameras setup all over, but never really got into hunting. I didn’t really have anybody to take me hunting when I was younger, so I guess I never got into it as a result.

I'd have to shoot more than 10,000 ducks just to cover my blind
It's a hobby for me, hobbies usually cost money so I'm fine with it

I don’t hunt in the morning. I enjoy drinking around a fire at night and then sleep in and hunt in the evening. I don’t hate deer enough to bother them in the morning

Born and raised in south Louisiana, fished all my life and love it. I never had an interest in hunting even though my dad and brothers duck hunted religiously. As a young boy I remember feeling bad for the ducks when my dad was cleaning them so I never wanted to shoot one. I had no problem throwing a flapping trout into his icy grave in the igloo however. And no way would I ever shoot a deer or other animal.
I guess I'm a pussy.
I'm just the opposite. I don't care for fishing (primarily because I suck at it), but love to hunt. Especially bow huntin'.
Whatever floats your boat.
