I did it and it’s pretty neat. 3rd generation Sicilian here

Yeah, if you can trace one family member back to Italy and they had your next generation relative before renouncing citizenship, then you qualify
I've only briefly looked into it but I want to do it. My GGM and GGF on the maternal side are from Sicily. However I don't know about the whole renouncement thing. My wife and I are gonna go buy a $1 house and live in peace and quiet!

Mind sharing your experience?

Lot of people can do it for less than 1k. Just have to pull all the documentation. Check the census records on ancestry.com to see what they put on there as a starting point

My ggrandfather came here at 16 during WWI through the church and was sponsored by a catholic family in Nola. At 17, he worked for the military as a translator bc he spoke 7 languages. We still have a very large family in the town he was from. Wonder if I would qualify.

Start with ancestry. They have an incredible amount of documents on there. As long as he didn't renounce his citizenship before having the next generation in your line

Have you checked with the Italian American Cultural Center ?
They help people with dual citizenship applications.

I dated a girl who did that. She wouldn’t shut up about it

My wife handled most of it. I know we paid some company out of California to find all of the documents. We were missing some important ones that they were able to find. There really wasn’t much after that except for applying for the passport.

This is a major "but why?" scenario.
Why not? You never know when dual citizenship might come in handy.

You went through the consulate?

Damn didn’t know about this. I can probably do that as moms side is all Sicilian

What am I missing, they give you a house for free ?

Just be sure you aren't in an industry that require or may require in the future a security clearance. Dual citizenship throws a huge wrench into that.

It was never an issue when I had a clearance in the United States Navy.

I have a clearance. Dual citizenship wouldn't affect it

You get an Italian passport so you can live anywhere in the EU. Homes in italy are pretty damn cheap if you end up buying something there
