Any Disabled Vets here upgraded their VA rating after they got out?

Any Disabled Vets been successful at upgrading their rating after they get out?
I retired from the Army 4 years ago and got a 60% disabled rating at retirement. Now I've been diagnosed with sleep apnea that the neurologist says is caused by my service related disability.
Have any of the disabled vets here been able to go back and link a new disability to a service connected one?

That sleep apnea thing is bs. Not service related at all. I have sleep apnea and I'm in the service and I think it's bs.

Good luck. Most of the shite I've read says that unless you were diagnosed while still in it's difficult to prove that it's service related.

I agree with this. I broke my wrist while in the Army during a training event, it doesn't bother me at all but they acknowledged it as Service Connected and rated it 0%, so no compensation but service connected. If in the future it starts bothering me I'd like to think it will be covered.
I say all of that to make the point that if it wasn't documented while in, you're probably going to have a tough time proving it's connected.

SA is tricky with the VA but if your doctor is willing to write a letter saying your SA is caused from your SC disability then you should be good. Make sure you get a good VSO who knows how to deal with it.

I have a feeling you're right. But it'll never hurt to try. I have service connected muscular dystrophy. My saving grace is that people with MD are known to have a 3-4 times greater chance of ending up with sleep apnea than a normal person.

You'll read on that site where people have gotten SA secondary to PTSD or because their disability causes immobilization which caused them to gain weight which then leads to SA.
It can and has been done, just very hard which is why a good VSO is very important. Just READ READ READ up on it. You only get one chance to file so make sure all your ducks are lined up.
ETA: If the your SA requires a CPAP then thats a 50% rating and with you already at 60% that would bump you to 80%. Thats a significant jump.

Ex-wife was able to get the VA to upgrade her from 50% to 75% disabled but then also declared her "unemployable" meaning she gets full pay
She had PTSD and ulcerative colitis as her diagnoses. She was very very sick and still deals with issues.
It took almost 3 years to be completely processed at the VA.
The good news was they start your disability pay at the date you apply meaning you receive some SWEET tax-free backpay

Nope. Mine's at 10% and likely won't budge.
Wifey's getting her initial rating this month though and she should have more than mine.

From what I heard they were going to or did stop doing sleep apnea compensation because so many fat bodies were going in and getting it and working the system.

They haven't stopped yet. A buddy of mine just got his rating yesterday and the 50% SA is on it.

Pretty sure they did try but it didn't work. Of course there are disgraceful fatbodies trying to abuse the system but there are also many who genuinely got it secondary because of a previous disability.

OP, the smart approach is to be persistent. Contact the Disabled American Veterans. They can give you good advice.
The older vets I know all say that you need to keep applying for increases because you physical conditions will tend to worsen as you get older.

I don't know your story man, but 60% is pretty damn good. I know guys that are pretty fricked up (physically) and not getting that.

I'm also at 60% but have never tried going back to add anything additional once I got out. Keep us updated OP.

I know I'm lucky to have 60%. I was truly surprised that they came back with that. I'm kinda hesitant about trying to increase it because I'm convinced they'll try to reduce it.

I do too. I was lucky enough to work in hospitals while I was in. So I knew how and what to get put in my records to increase my chances at a good rating. It's sad that a lot of Commands try to look down on guys that are really messed up and just say they are malingering. They get the tough guy mentality, don't get everything documented and end up paying for it when they get out.

As a veteran myself I have seen many people take advantage of the system regarding disability, including my sister. She enlisted with migraines and carpal tunnel. After 6 years, she was honorably discharged and now receives benefits for those exact ailments.
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way implying the OP is taking advantage, just making a statement of my experience with disability benefits and can not answer the OP's question.

I was lucky.. They lost my medical records in transit back from Okinawa, so I basically got everything I claimed. I have considered looking at getting my rating updated, but that shite took me 3 years initially and am not crazy about dealing with all their bullshite again. Keep us updated on how the process goes. You might as well get it. There are plenty of turds in this country that will always get $$$ from the government although they have never contributed a thing to society.

I have nothing against people playing the system to their advantage. Big Army truly does not care about you, you're just a number. So you might as well look out for yourself when setting yourself up for life after the military is concerned. And if they didn't catch a disability on your entrance physical, oh well on their part.

Isn't ulcerative colitis genetic??
I'm not accusing anyone in this thread but my ex military friends say they know tons of vets who game the system, claiming PTSD when they never even left the wire.
