Thinking about leaving the company I have been with the last 5 years as an Operations Manager for a domestic asset based trucking company. My current pay is strictly Salary with minimal quarterly bonus if goals met.

The new Brokerage gig has a base salary plus commission. I’ve been told by a few people I have talked with, I should be taking home Atleast my current jobs salary range with not too much extra effort.

Any of you OT folks have freight brokerage experience? If so, how was it and would you recommend it?

My daughter's (no pics) boyfriend is a freight broker. I know he does pretty well financially but also that it's very stressful, especially now with the supply change and logistics issues.

That's all I got.

When talking about not more effort, im just just comparing the pay ranges between current job and the opportunity which has a commission factor.

I’m not settling for what I currently make. Work ethic is not a problem here.

Don’t fricking do it if it’s on commission. Those lean times in a down economy suck! Right now everybody is begging for trucks and paying spot rare a lot of times. You can make a lot of bank. I worked through the financial crisis and it sucked. Worked my way up the office ladder to doing oversized customer management but I was salary with bonus based off year over year office growth.

Also be ready to be told no a lot.

It’s a great career but be careful what company you work with. If you live in Chattanooga then I would look up Steam Logistics.

That’s actually the company I’m looking at. Have heard a lot of good things about them as a Company and their culture. Just unsure on the brokerage career piece and the volatility of market with commission. Not going to get anywhere though if not taking risks.

Well then there is your sign because there’s like 1,000 brokers in Chattanooga and I happened to recommend the one you’re looking at.

I used to work for the same owners and executives at another company. They’re all really solid people.

You’re definitely going to have to put in the hours. I’m pretty much on call all the time. But the money is great once you get your book of business going. I truly love what I do. Been doing this since 2010 now.

As someone who has done logistics since I’ve been out of college…

Brokering has it’s ups and downs. The initial is fairly tough and frustrating because you’re trying to build your book of business, your client base, etc. Once you nail that you’re pretty good.

I don't care what your pay is, get the container ships unloaded, so I can go back to inperson shopping.

I did it for about 15 years. If you have the accounts, it's great. The key is to keep trying to generate new accounts. But, as a broker, you really don't have anything to offer your customers, unless the company that you sign on with also has their own trucks.

If you're in Chattanooga, steer clear of Tranco Logistics and Access America.

So why would you move to a new position that would require more effort for the same pay? Is this worded strangely or do I have Covid brain?

Could me worded strangely as I have Covid Brain myself.

But I would not be looking at the same pay unless there was just minimal effort (from what I’ve been told) put forth in the brokerage job. My plan would be Atleast make 40k-50k more if possible. The Brokerage gig is Salary + commission. My current Role is something I’ve gotten burned out on and lost interest in and it’s just paid salary with 1-2% annual raises. However I’m still giving max effort, just my heart isn’t in it anymore.
