One of my roommates in college was from a ritzy Cleveland suburb. He graduated high school and got the f$&k out of there asap. He lives in NYC now.

Outside of Drew Carrey, the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and Cedar Point, Ohio absolutely blows.

If that’s where you are going to live now, dive into the culture whole-heartedly. What do people do for fun up there? Get to know the National forests and the outdoors. Go to church. Go to concerts. Join a club. Just dive in and you’ll never look back. Every place has its own charms. Find them.

Got a question for you and other baws who left South Louisiana. How has your family treated you?

My wife was born in Houma and never really left South Louisiana until she graduated from college and got recruited by one of NWA's multitude of Fortune 500s. I was a similar situation where I was recruited from elsewhere in AR to work in NWA.

Outside of her parents, everyone else in her family seems to act like she doesn't exist. I noticed some posts earlier in this thread that state, "Money isn't everything" and "Friends and family are worth more than money". I wonder if this is a cultural thing in South LA?

My family thought it was the greatest thing ever that I was going to work for the Fortune #1 company. Her family makes snarky comments about the size of our house and our vehicles. Just blows my mind.

I moved from South Louisiana and Seattle three years ago and it's the best decision I've ever made. It's a beautiful state with lots of shite to do, amazing summers, legal weed, good breweries, and a noticeable lack of morons/rednecks.

I would feel some anxiety about moving to Ohio because, well, Ohio sucks. Say what you want about Louisiana, at least it has culture. Ohio is a shithole.

Rough, then it got better after I met my SO.

Louisiana's not going anywhere. If you miss it you can always move back. I have a feeling Ohio will be much better for you.

In Louisiana, families feel a real tie to the land itself. Families often have lived on the same piece of land for 5,6,7 generations or more. When kids decide to leave, those left behind often feel like the kids only leave because they think they’re “too good” for the town they came from. Thus, every decision that kid makes is seen through the lens of “they must be showing off”. In reality, most people only leave their home town for economic reasons. If the same opportunities existed here, they wouldn’t have to leave. When the options are unemployed in Louisiana or big time job out of state, it’s hard to blame them for leaving, but small-minded people often still do.

You will miss your family, your friends, the food, the familiar places, traditions, and ways you grew up around. You might even miss rainy days sometimes.

You will not miss the unreal LA humidity, hot summers, and impotent autumns and winters. You will be surprised how long winter lasts, and how great Spring is.

You will miss the SEC, the Saints, and familiar accents. You might hate tOSU and the Big 10. You will probably experience some kind of manic homesickness and culture shock.

The first year will be the hardest. It gets better. But plan to travel home to LA at least once or twice a year - or more. And stay in touch with fam and friends. You will do just fine. There is life outside SoLA and depending on what attitude you bring with you, it can be real good. Connect to where you will be.

SIL's family is from Louisiana. They live outside of Cleveland now. They loved it so much they convinced my brother to move up there.

Wouldn't be my choice, but if I either had to move back to Baton Rouge, or move to Cleveland, I'm buying winter clothing tomorrow.

I think Southern women just wear more makeup.

Maybe it is just that particular area but I spent almost a year total in Cleveland and didn't find the women nearly as attractive. Columbus was totally the opposite

Ohio has some of the best deer hunting in the country. You will need to use a bow, shotgun, or muzzle loader only though. No center fire rifles are allowed.

Congrats on your new adventure. Take it for what it is and give it a year or two. You can always move again once you’ve fully decided where you want to be long-term. Any experience you gain makes you more valuable career-wise.

I left LA after college for six years. My job actually moved me to BR from San Antonio for work and that is where I settled down with my wife. If her family did not live close to us now, I’d have moved again several years ago. Part of me really wants to move again, but the other part of me says we are content living in the best part of the state at this time of our lives.

I actually did move after college and sadly, I wasn’t mature enough to appreciate the opportunities I had before me. So like a dumbass, I moved back after 6 months. Been in Louisiana again since the mid 70s.
My advice...move out to see what’s out there. In other words, make a life for yourself on your terms.

Do it while you are young. I've lived in NYC and Nola but ended up back in BR. It became a lot more difficult to move around after I was married with a kid because I don't want to uproot my entire family.

My daughter will graduate HS when I'm still relatively young (47). My plan is to move to Asheville or someplace more scenic and cooler when she's done.

This.

I’ll also add, don’t be that guy who goes around telling everyone how much better home is than where you are. Even if you find that to be true you’ll just make yourself miserable and everyone else will hate you.

Every please has something good about it. And if it doesn’t work out, you can always move back.

GTFO and don’t come back, ever, unless you have a career death wish.

Left spring 2017 for a great job offer in central florida.

I'm 35 now and have wife and one kid. It was stressful but new job has so much room for growth and opportunity that my excitement for career overcame stress.

Louisiana is really a career desert. So tied to oil and hard to move up with good ole boy network.

I miss south la culture, food, fishing, crawfish boils, occasional NOLA weekend....but I DO NOT miss baton rouge.

.....also note I lived in br area my whole life aside from a 3 month summer up in upstate NY in 2006. It was time to get out.
