I saw an intermodal train rolling out of Chicago on the UP west line the other day. A lot of containers had the doors open.

I wonder what was stolen out of those.....

Well now, I stand corrected. I should've seen your old story in the OP...

Its why my furniture I ordered in June of 2021 isn't arriving now until June of 2022. A lot of the pieces were stolen outside the Port of LA in November.

From my experience they open them randomly. Not even the paperwork the train crew carries says what is in the containers as long as it's not Hazmat. This isn't organized crime with lists of container numbers and what they are carrying, along with their location in the train.

Look at the video you linked and you'll see opened containers with nothing removed from them.

These dirtbags aren't looking for tires or dog food. If they open a container with that type of stuff they just move to the next.

Railroads need to go back to Pinkertons and make examples of some of these folks.

I've heard they have hit containers filled with guns and ammunition repeatedly in Memphis, LA, Chicago, and other cities over the last two years which has contributed to the ammunition and gun shortage.

AP video article on this from 4 years ago

Crooks learn.

Wiseguy (the book Goodfellas is based on) talks about how half-literate mob guys learned about things like bills of lading and other paperwork to figure out what to grab and when.

Fur coats may be a great item but grabbing them in the summer means you get a shite price for them or have to hold onto them.

OTOH, the crooks’ bar that served as an unofficial HQ for hijacking at JFK would have lists of heavily in-demand cargos that people would be on the lookout for, as those would be quick sales for big money.

I love how the author of the article included this bit to stir up the shite libs because he knew the lawlessness of these acts wouldn't move the meter.

Here’s my solution. At the door of every car with valuable stuff on it, put up a stack of things like books, or polka albums, or work boots,

They’ll open the door, see things they don’t need, and move on.

Or they could insert a solid piece of metal to prevent the door from being opened. None of the bottom containers are getting opened because it sits down in the rail car.

They could extend something similar to the top container.

I’m actually a fan of polka, but that may be why I don’t rob train cars.

Let rattlesnakes and black mambas loose in the freight cars, put warning signs on the door then let nature take its course

The big railroads do have their own police forces. And yes, they are real police, not just security guards.

Obviously they don't have enough of them in the LA and Chicago areas.

That's pretty entrepreneurial

If they're taking furniture and leaving epipens, then they're morons. You can't find those things for less than $100 per unit and are a lot easier to move and hide

They could possibly do something with the interconnectors between the containers to block the doors from opening but they would be a lot bigger and heavier. Meaning more difficult to install for a single person.
