Another grinds my gears thread: Is rap ruining the English language?

You hear it all the time in these ‘musician’s (very loose with that term) lyrics...
Just absolutely terrible lyrics with made-up words that don’t have a meaning. Kids grow up not knowing how to speak and it sounds awful.
Literally just heard this conversation at the checkout line:
“You seen (let’s say bob)?
-“Nah, I donno where he at”
“(Let’s say Pam) said he be to his house”
My concern with this shite is that it’ll carry on so far for so long that people will actually think it’s the appropriate way to talk and interact. Get off my lawn!

Yes rap, which has been around 40 years, has ruined language despite it being mangled since essentially the invention of it.

This style of speech is much older than rap.

Language evolves. Maybe faster now. But a person can know two ways of talking--their colloquial regional talk (redneck-anese, ghetto, etc.) as well as standard, professional setting English.
The only real problem is when people know only the former.

Apparently so.

400 years ago they would have said the same thing about Shakespeare. And I think rap sucks. But language is never static.

That shite Migos does (the rap group for those that don’t know) where they ad lib over and over is infuriating and has caught on with pretty much every other rapper nowadays. Wish it would stop
