SAREPTA, LA. (KSLA) -

A Sarepta woman is dead after an ATV crash Sunday at Muddy Bottoms ATV and Recreation Park.

Police say it happened at 2:30 a.m. when 40-year-old Jill Thomas and another female passenger were driving an ATV at the park. According to police, neither Thomas or her passenger were wearing protective gear.

Thomas reportedly hit a tree with the ATV and was killed at the scene. Her passenger was airlifted to University Health Hospital in Shreveport where she is in critical condition.

The crash is still under investigation.

This is the third death at Muddy Bottoms since the park opened in May of 2014.

I wonder what their liability insurance renewal will look like.

Damn

Seems all the accidents happen at night IIRC? Maybe they should suspend night riding.

I am certainly no soothsayer, but if I had to guess this investigation may be wrapped up within the hour.

I don't blame the park.

We have developed a culture of distracted drivers. Music, drink, wireless devices, and selfies. Automobile safety features like seat belts, air bags, and composite body materials give people a false sense of security on the road.

On ATV's, people forget how vulnerable they are.

Prayers to the families involved.

Again, I don't blame the park.

What did the park do that's negligent? Tell the tree to jump in front of the approaching ATV

Do you mean, "was personal responsibility involved?"

I had an economics GA at Auburn make this point. He said if we wanted to decrease traffic accidents there should be a giant metal spike mounted in the steering wheel inches from your face. Everyone would be easing around very carefully.

Places like this and the spillway are the absolute worst in attracting dumb rednecks. Accident happened at 2:30am --That should tell you all you need to know.

I'm sure there was no alcohol involved (end sarcasm), and why would a 40 year old woman do something so stupid.

Or not much about lawyers and the lawsuits work.

I have had family members tell me that they make everyone sign a totally unenforceable injury waiver and that they do absolutely nothing to curtail alcohol use while driving. There are even ice machines, etc.

Still, I don't blame the park.

It likely won't be any difference. By LA law, The rider assumes all risk at these type places... well, theoretically.

LA Law...

No helmets... typical ATV riders.

Wow, looks like the law totally neglects three wheelers.

I give it about 1% chance that alcohol was not involved.

Very sad and completely avoidable.
