CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man walking in an alley was attacked by two pit bulls Wednesday morning in Chicago's West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
The elderly victim was taken to Saint Bernard Hospital. Witnesses said he suffered injuries to his hands and shoulder.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. in the 5900 block of South Marshfield Avenue.
Workers boarding up a building across the street heard the commotion and helped the man.
"I jumped in my truck and tried pushing the dogs against the fence," said Joe Drish, a supervisor with Cook County Board Up. "I realized the dogs weren't going to push off the body, so I grabbed my nail gun and proceeded to shoot the dogs with my nail gun."
Chicago police and animal control took away the pair of dogs who were in the care of Renard Thurmand, 63.
"The dog slid under the fence and attacked him," Thurmand said. "The second dog slid under the fence and helped. By the time I got there the dog was too involved and didn't want to stop."
Some of the scene was captured on cellphone video from across the street by neighbor Shantay Crenshaw.
"It was real bad," she said of the victim's injuries. "From his arms from his neck everything was bleeding."
The dogs are expected to be euthanized.
Thurmand, who expressed sympathy for the victim, maintains he was mistreated by authorities and wants his dogs back.
"I told them that if they are going to euthanize them they was going to have to shoot me too," he said.

These two sentences basically sum up the southside. Only thing missing is a gang member and a innocent dead bystander.

That close to 63rd and Ashland? Not a surprise.

Sounds like a plan.
Much as I love my dogs, they attack a human being outside of protecting one of their pack members (ie US) and I'll them myself. They are fricking dogs, a human is a human.

Here comes the OT trash who will swear a Pomeranian is just as deadly as a pit bull

FYI pitbull people. This is why they are not good pets to have. It only takes one time and all of a sudden you are dealing with a beast that a man had to use a nail gun on to get it off of a man it was attacking because him in his truck trying to push the dogs against the fence didn't work.

frick ALL pit bulls. Seriously, all of them. Kill them all now. If they haven’t attacked yet, they will. It’s just a matter of time. And that includes you, the guy who is going to post that HIS pit is raised right and would never hurt a fly. Yes, he too will eventually hurt someone. If he happens to die before he does, he merely ran out of time.

Nope. Have had many. "Never hurt a fly." Didn't eventually hurt anyone.
Pit bull terriers were the most popular breed in the US a century ago. The Little Rascals ran around with Petey the Pit Bull Terrier. The RCA dog is a pit bull. They are rarely aggressive towards humans, and when they are, it is a result of neglect and mistreatment -ie. an irresponsible owner.
It's not a breed problem. It's a people problem – just like guns. Guns are designed to kill people. And when they are in the wrong hands, bad things happen.
