This did happen a few years ago.
That's why you get copies of all the tickets in a pool and share the copy with everyone

At this point there might be greater odds of someone winning than no one winning with all the tickets sold

No shite
There is a reason these things never get up to 5 or 10 billion. Once the amount gets high enough a lot more people buy them

Would just suck if the lottery claimed they were broke and couldn't make the payout like what has happened in some states.

That's why you go lump sum
Posted on 10/19/18 at 8:53 pm to LSU6262
So 1 billion dollars after taxes:
Lump sum= $465,356,083.09
Annuity= $750,000,00.00
I’ll take the annuity and the extra $284,643,917
No brainer. I would have more money than the lum sum total in 20 years.

If you win, hire a professional because you are incredibly wrong

You should hire someone to help you in finance if this is what you calculated

you have to claim it in the state it was bought.
This doesn’t include moving after you win but I still found it interesting.

Annuity. I can always call JG Wentworth if I need cash now.

I guess nobody won. Now it is at 1.6 billion.
Lum sum= $687,724,000
After 30 payments: $1,215,999,990
Annuity is $528,275,990 more money. No brainer.

Lump sum I would rather invest it myself.
Do not want them to make interest off the money that is not theirs.

We're going to get a few with the cash option and a few with annuity and add an extra layer of chance.
At this point you're probably getting $40mm a year with the annuity. That's like winning the base mega millions jackpot every year (cash option) for a third of your life.

If you ever run into a lot of money, hire someone because you are money ignorant

Maybe there's a reason the lotto pays higher annuities?

Because people are stupid.
Annuity would be $528,275,990.00 more money than the lump sum. Unless you are old or morbid obsess/health problems then the annuity is a no brainer. But if you are in your 20’s and 30’s and healthy then take the extra 528 million dollars. Don’t say “No” to an extra 528 million.
Annuity payout of 1.6 billion
Net pay: (after taxes)
Year 1= 18.3 millon
Year 5= 22.2 million
Year 10= 28.3 million
Year 15= 36.2 million
Year 20= 46.2 million
Year 25= 59 million
Year 30= 75 million
Your lowest yearly pay day will be 18.3 million in one year. If you spend all of that in a year then you are in trouble no matter what you do. By year 20 you will pass up the lump sum and “NO” you will not be able to invest your lum sum and become Mark Cuban otherwise you would be doing that right now and making millions if you knew what you were doing. Even a low interest safe investment will not net you more than what you will make with the annuity which is an extra 500 million. You can still invest millions of dollars with the annuity.
Young and healthy then take the extra 500 million.
