This is a really stupid "saying" when it comes to academia. I've had plenty of professors who both "did" in the professional world and the academic world.
I guess it could apply to elementary/high school.

in regards to pay, lets say a certain parish teacher makes 45K over 182 working days
the normal weekly worker works 52*5 = 260 days - vacation and holidays so lets say 240 days
teachers salary of 45K equates to about 60K per year
my wife doesnt complain about work or pay, she's pretty content with both

no one gets into teaching for the money....so trying to insult a teacher by telling them you make more than them shouldnt really have an impact JMO

insult? i simply said i would take my salary (which comes with my profession) over their vacation (which comes with their profession). There are many insults in this thread, if you think mine is one, you are just a big pussy.

The teachers I know work pretty hard, although I'm aware of plenty of worthless ones.
Moreover, a lot of the things teachers use to compare their lives to higher paying jobs amuse me. Like "ugh, I can't believe I'm spending sunday afternoon working on lesson plans."
I agree, it sucks, and I agree, good teachers work hard. But what happens if my friend does a sloppy job on a lesson plan? Nothing, really. What happens if your accountant/doctor/lawyer/etc. does a sloppy job on something? Potentially something.
I do know a few teachers who live and breathe success of students, so I do think that piles on additional stress. But I also know a lot who bitch and bitch and then stop whatever super crucial thing the have to do and go out.
