Never understood the hate for teachers on this board. It's like they don't realize they would be illiterate without them. Teachers should be valued more than they are. Yes there are some really crappy ones out there... But usually they don't last long anyway. I'm biased because my mom is a teacher but the majority of teachers I know really do care about children and work very hard. Just because they get those days off doesn't mean they aren't learning new methods at conferences or doing lesson plans.

Never suggested that. Just responded to saying teachers get so much time off. It is time off without pay for it. If it is so easy and overpaid, seems like more people would be doing it including the idiots on here. You can thank a teacher for your OT ballin careers.
College teachers (some) should get most of the credit for that. I was homeschooled through 8th grade and taught myself most of the material straight out of the book. Went to a catholic high school where the teaching was average at best, did well because I was already good at teaching myself and being resourceful.
I learned quickly at LSU that you can't teach yourself through engineering, or I couldnt at least. With certain teachers you had no choice, but there were a lot of others who definitely earned their paycheck.

There it is. The ole "but we're at conferences and stuff" response.

Unfortunately, education degrees attract a certain type of person.
Not all, but a good portion, only get that degree because they cant think of anything else and its easy. They were able to get through college with minimal effort and have lots of "fun" while on their parents dime. Problem is, they then become professionals and want that same lifestyle to continue. They don't want to deal with the legitimate hardships that many teachers undertake while at the job, and worse yet, they can no longer afford the lifestyle they had grown accustomed to. This leads to crappy teachers, with crappy attitudes, who are crappy people to be around.
Thankfully, many universities are encouraging STEM majors to dual major in education by paying for their schooling. They get their STEM degrees and then spend a couple years afterwards teaching. This, hopefully, leads to some of them staying and becoming lifelong teachers.

My mom taught me how to read before I began going to school. I don't hate teachers, but I do find it funny that they are pissed off that they are now held accountable. One of my teacher friends actiay said "what if my principal doesn't like me? I won't get a raise and I may get fired". My response was, "welcome to life".

The three most bitched about professions on social media are:
1. Teachers
2. Nurses
3. Stay at home moms
Yall find the common denominator

maybe its because I read the OT, but I tend to read 3x as much bitching about teachers bitching, than I actually read teachers bitching
It's a constant cry-fest on the political talk board as well. Whining about "whiners," without any sense of irony.

But what happens if my friend does a sloppy job on a lesson plan? Nothing, really. What happens if your accountant/doctor/lawyer/etc. does a sloppy job on something? Potentially something.
It depends what level and kind of teaching you are talking about (also I'd be very surprised if most successful accountants, doctors and lawyers were never ever sloppy).
As the poster Moustache said, there are tons of dumb teachers in high school and elementary--the more teachers are paid, however, the more competitive the profession becomes. And competition is always good.

One person's whiny complaint is another's just grievance.

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.
