Oh, I wasn't even talking about that part. It's a Sopranos reference.
When Uncle Junior started to get senile he would infuriate Tony by randomly and inappropriately repeating over and over again that Tony didn't have the makings of a varsity athlete to anyone who happened to be around.

I want to spend quality time with my children away from other people to teach them the things I learned growing up in the woods, on the water, and on the farm. It made me a better person, and closer to my parents and siblings, than spending summer practicing and playing baseball. Most of the kids I grew up with that did that, rather than what I did, ended up less successful than the ones that went down the path that I traveled.
cool do that, nobody is forcing you to play travel nor encouraging you.
thats what you want for your kids cool
i would rather my kids choose their own path and i will support it so long as they make straight As. Bs in my house means you dont play

We did play fall and spring sports, but summer time was for family
99% of teams are done by 2nd week in june. if you dont want to play that much there are teams that only play until memorial day weekend
but if you dont want to play at all...nobody cares, but dont bitch at others who have kids that want to play
i agree on going to church. being catholic there is hardly ever a time where we are forced to miss. we can go saturday afternoon or sunday morning or that afternoon. hardly ever will you be playing the whole day both days. hell last year went to a spanish mass as that was only one available where we were playing(non catholic area)

I got a 12yo who plays travel ball. We don’t travel outside of Chalmette or Metairie twice a month. I had a daughter playing travel softball. She now is playing high school softball.
They both love their sports. They also love the break between fall and spring when we spend time hunting.
My kids want to play in high school they say. If they didn’t play travel they would have 1% chance to make a hs team. It’s all about the reps. As someone previously said on here, rec is bad bc they practice once a week until the season starts. Then play 1-2 games a week for 8 weeks and it’s over. They don’t get the reps in needed to play at the next level.
If a school has a freshman team, jv, and varsity; only 27 kids will be playing regularly. Schools like st Charles catholic has 15 kids per class hoping to see the field from 8th-12th.

Oh yeah. lsu777 referenced that earlier.

First year playing "travel ball" for my son was this year. He is 6 and playing up in 7U.
We did it because he was better than every single kid in the rec league for 2 years in a row. He also played up in rec league as well.
I have 0 regrets going to tournament ball and neither does my wife. We haven't travelled further than prairieville (we live in BR). My son has gotten better, the whole team has gotten better, and they have well beyond exceeded everyone's expectations.
I've talked to A LOT of parents at these tournaments and my general consensus it this......
The ones that talk shite about "travel ball" or are pissed off at another organization, etc. are the ones who's kids weren't good enough to make the team or earn playing time and they can't accept it.
My son very well may not be good enough at some point and I am fine with that, but you better believe I am going to push him to work hard no matter what.
I am also an avid outdoorsman and love to do it every chance I get. But you know what it didn't teach me? How to be part of a team. Every kid needs that because in reality most jobs require you to be part of a team.

I agree but that’s not my point. I’m talking about how many people spend all of this money but don’t really get anything out of it from a baseball standpoint but get lots from social standing
well that comes from parents being ignorant and not knowing anything themselves
the part about the double cut, usually wont know that until 14u anyways as fields usually are not big enough
but your point stands. it is a social thing for some, thats ok too
i will never understand the OT obsession with making fun of kids for playing sports too much
considering the ot constantly complains about kids being inside too much
-not everything has to look like it did when you grew up
-not every kid or parent likes to hunt and fish as much as you did
-spending time in the woods doesnt mean you will grow up to be more successful nor does spending time on the baseball field
-if kids are having fun, who gives a frick
- why does the OT have such a hard on for how others spend their money
-if you dont like HS baseball or baseball in general, thats ok, not everyone likes the same things. thats ok too

Travel ball is for fools that are easily parted from their money.
When I hear someone is neck deep in travel ball I make a mental note judgment -“this person is unserious and not intelligent.”

thank you
if you listen to the OT, everyone that does travel is poor, drives jacked up trucks while living in a trailer drowning in debt, vape in one hand, drink in the other with tatoos everywhere
which is pretty much the furthest thing from the truth

you understand that for some the money is no big deal right? if you are so intelligent then why dont you make enough to where 2k isnt that big of a deal?
hell even if it cost 10k a year...is that really that much? sorry you are so intelligent but poor. maybe you should do something with that crazy high IQ you have.

quote:Many adult Americans have no understanding of the concept of personal responsibility.
The amount of parents who will complain to coaches, principals, even school boards about their kid getting cut or not making the varsity or not playing enough is a nationwide problem in high school baseball right now and driving very good coaches out of the game.

so who is doing it right?
is it the ones whos kids can make the HS team and are encouraged to follow their passions while maintaining grades?
or
is the ones that get on here and bitch about travel ruining rec?
or
is it the dominicans that take kids from their homes around 10 and put them at boarding schools where they live, go to school and train 6 hours a day?
btw you dumbasses do realize there are only like 10 leagues in the whole state for 13/14 year olds and if you want to play after 12 pretty much have to play travel?
yall also realize the HS teams yall cheer on and the college teams you chear are made up exclusively of travel ball players

I agree with a lot of what you say, and agree that kids should have some say in the decision if they are good at the sport and want to play it. I'm not saying haul the kids off from something that they love to do, even though my posts may come off that way (especially my first post ITT). I loved baseball, and I may have been good at it, but summer time was spent with the family at the lake or on the farm. And I think I am much better for it. That said, even if a child is good at a sport, when and if the sport starts impacting other obligations as parent, including to other children in the family and to God, a line should be drawn.
I have seen how my brother is hauled to the ends of the earth even for practice on a Sunday morning, after a game on a Saturday evening, without regard to church obligations for the families involved. That is ridiculous.
All of the above being taken into account, I live in a town that is BIG travel ball. I have seen parents act so stupid and foolish about it that it would blow your mind. Screaming at refs and coaches, posting asinine crap on social media, fights, etc. I will not bring my children around that. I don't want them to see such stupid behavior and think its normal any more than I will take them to a honky tonk with a bunch of drunks acting stupid.

People don’t get rich blowing money and, worse, their time, on travel ball.
