What happened? Did they have a mandatory evacuation and he wasn't going to let the government tell him what to do so he was fighting for his civil liberties?

If I was going to move to a lake in Alabama it would be Guntersville, only an hour drive from Bham. Would also consider Lay

A search is underway for a gunman who slashed the tires of Hoover police vehicles and then fired several shots at officers.

The ordeal began about 8 p.m. at the Hoover Operations Center on Lorna Road.

Police Chief Nick Derzis said an officer was leaving the building when he noticed a man in the parking lot stabbing the tires on the cruisers parked there.

The officer yelled at the man and then went back inside to get more officers for backup. The man was armed with a knife and a gun.

It'll sound cruel, but in all honesty, this guy should be dead. "Mental health crisis" or not, it is a bad precedent to set.

We have a loud, but extremely small, BLM contingent in this area that calls itself "Cell A65." They're very mad at Hoover PD and Hoover because the City refuses to drop charges against them for illegal activities they participated in when BLM was terrorizing the country last year. Jeffco and Birmingham did drop their charges against similar local groups so they think they can bully our far more conservative area into doing the same. So far Hoover hasn't budged.

It may be that this is just some wackjob, but I'd bet good money that a guy slashing tires in a cop car parking lot in Hoover is a part of that group. They aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.

ETA: Cell A65 has a public Facebook page that is easy to find. They've been posting a lot of "feed the homeless" event pics here lately. They're feeding the homeless because they have to get legit community service hours by court order.

Maybe, but the cops also didn’t shoot back when he fired at them.

This is the oddest part of this whole story. Makes me think maybe they didn't see the gun and were surprised by the gunfire.

Ehh if he was standing in front of civilians or residences (and was not close range) the cops aren't going to fire at him.

he was in front of retail stores, but also in the direct line of fire for HWY 31, a very busy and active road

cops did the right thing on this by not returning fire - we could have had a drive by incident very easily...

Didn't know you lived in Green Valley. I got the alert and I live right off of Alford. Have a buddy that lives near Star Lake and he said it was crazy.

They pick this instance to not return fire??? Maybe they didn't have a good shot to take.

I don't know why folks are so shocked. I can think of very few officer involved shootings with the Hoover PD. They seem to be very restrained.
