Correct, the heavy upfront costs of synthesizing and developing the compound had nothing to do with the trouser weasel. It was a drug Pfizer was developing to control high blood pressure. It became apparent part way through the trial that it wasn't working for what they'd developed it for, so they ended the trial. When they'd roll the men over into the proper position to measure blood pressure, they'd invariably find soldiers standing at attention.

Pfizer realized the fricking gold mine they were sitting on and pivoted the drug's development to producing boners. A big part of it was also changing the language used. You were no longer "impotent", which carried some stout negative social connotations. You had a physiological condition called "erectile dysfunction" which didn't carry the stigma that "impotent" did. They also openly talked about it on TV and got prominent people to be their spokesmen to further make it okay to talk about your limp noodle.
