Yeah, it's called Southwest Airlines.

Take Amtrak instead of trying to sit in traffic.

How are you getting to the Amtrak station again? Where do you think it would be, on campus?

Origin was stated as MSY. When you live in a backwater, you have to sacrifice. BTR is a backwater that won't make SWA money, so they're not coming. Greyhound provides the services you seek.

There is some novelty in those numbers. How will Mardi Gras hold the numbers after football season? We shall see. The route is pretty shite in reality for connecting what could be a much better route to Tallahassee, Pensacola or Jacksonville.

Rumor is that Amtrak is considering reviving the old eastern portion of the Sunset Limited route between NOLA-JAX that was "suspended" after Katrina depending on how the Mardi Gras ridership turns out.

That route includes a stop in Ft. Walton... a train to 30A would be nice.

The contract with Mobile makes expansion to the East tough. The contract would have to be renegotiated.

The rumor is the Mobile mayor didn't want to become just another stop on the line of everyone taking the train to Florida beaches.

I think there is an end date on that agreement though. I may be mistaken.

I would bet you are right. Probably through the financial commitments from the city. So maybe just long enough to establish enough ridership.

While the service's success marks the return of a long-lost route, Ross said it also offers a sign of the revival of coastal communities, from New Orleans to Bay St. Louis, that were decimated by Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago.
The inappropriate use of “decimated” here is so damn lazy.

Reduced by 1/10th is the literal meaning. Doesn’t apply.

Also, what are the coastal communities “from New Orleans to Bay St Louis” that are being allegedly revived?

The Rigolets?
Port & Harbor?

Pearlington(?), it without Highway 90 westbound service for years and without real future plans to restore the service is certainly not in anything near a “revival” at Post K 20+. And regardless, the train doesn’t get near Pearlington.

Lazy shite hack writing.

Have taken the train twice, but not yet all the way to Mobile. One of Mobile issues is they don't have a real station and rail yard. Expansion might require crew changes, adding/removing cars, and even freight passage, which could be complicated without the infrastructure there.

It could work out if there was a stop/layover in Mobile before trains head further east.

Bullet Train in Japan is near the top of my list of things to do while visiting Nippon.

It's a good way to get around quickly but I'm not sure what you're expecting. It's really nothing more than a faster train. Just like airlines they have different classes of service (ordinary, green, and gran) and different itineraries. What would be an hour flight from Tokyo to Sendai, the quickest (least stops) shinkansen can do it in 1:30. (from ~$80-$170). I've never been on a dirty train and they do pass through with a snack/drink cart but some of the cattle car trains can and do look well used. And before you say, 'yeah, but it comes without the hassle of going through an airport', I would advise you to look how massive Tokyo train station and others are. Multiple levels with multiple platforms. Thankfully the use of signage in English is prevalent.

The stop would likely be in Crestview.... this is where the Sunset Limited used to stop.

Then bus or limo to FWB, Destin, SoWal.

I wish there was an Amtrak option between Shreveport and DFW. I-20 is packed with waaaaaaaaay too many cars and jamb packed with semi's.

When I moved to DFW in '97, I could drive from the I-635 / Hwy. 80 interchange to the city limits of Shreveport in under 2 hours if I was in a real hurry, but normally in 2 hours and 20 minutes on average. Now? Lucky if it's just 3 hours of stress-filled, backed-up hell.

I-20 needs to be made into a minimum of three lanes each side all the way to Atlanta.

Another issue with the current Mobile endpoint is the location on the street. That platform is located near the bottom of an expressway exit ramp, across six lanes of traffic from where you want to go, with a very small neutral ground in the middle. They need to put some effort into improving safety for their visitors. Anyone returning to the train after getting their buzz on at Mobile’s version of Bourbon St. - whatever that is - is in jeopardy.

How a coincidence. I actually had a video on YouTube pop up early today about how regional lines were performing very well for Amtrak
