Amite---An Amite High School student athlete fell dead Tuesday evening immediately after football practice. Amite Police Chief Jerry Trabona said they received a call around 9 p.m. about an emergency at the school.

quote:

Trabona said the team had just finished football practice, held late to avoid the heat of the day, and that Terrance was joking in the locker room before he fell to the ground.

Horrible situation. Not sure of his medical history, but sounds like the school tried to mitigate the heat factor by practicing at night.

It's mid-June. It's 6pm and literally 91 degrees RIGHT NOW. It doesn't "cool down" until like 10.

Remind me again why football can't be played during the winter rather than the hot as frick end of summer/fall? Or the Spring?

I feel like this is the easiest of situations to change.

Let's run two a days during the middle of the fricking 100 degree summer!!! Sweet! Can't wait coach, this is awesome!

in June? Isn't it two months until football season?

I never understood why schools start in the middle of August, must like high AC bills or suffering in the heat

It's been done for decades. The only thing that needs to change is more water breaks. But for some reason these dumbass coaches don't understand that

We're talking about football coaches - high school football coaches at that. Not the brightest bunch.

That's fricking stupid. Indoor sports during the hot arse summer/fall. Plus baseball. It's a stupid sport anyways.

Spring time Outdoor sports.

This shouldn't be there difficult to understand.

In the North they can reverse it. Or do whatever they want. IDGAF.

Coaches tell them to drink WHENEVER they want. Some may not drink enough (most of us don’t) others try to “tough” it out.

That said, no dam reason kids are playing football (wearing helmets) in this heat. I spoke with a Hs coach today who was telling me he thought HE almost had a heat stroke last week.

I’ve never heard of HS football practice in June. Spring training is March or April, and real preseason practice is August. June and July are weights and conditioning.

Back in the day kids were acclimated. They were outside all the time and even when inside there was no AC. Now they spend nearly all their time at a perfect 72 degrees. Of course they have trouble with the heat.

I was in high school in the mid 90's, we practiced 2-a-days all summer with weight lifting between practices. Our coach was Satan incarnate. I'm amazed all of us survived. My heart goes out to this young man's family. Horrible story.

Our practice is 8 am. Much cooler at 8 am before everything heats up all day.

Or enlarged heart or something of that nature (genetic) if he was showing no signs of laboring before collapsing.

Some our classrooms didn’t even have AC. And the windows were painted shut

School started at the end of August when I was in HS. We had August two a days, one water break each session

I think when Huey Woodson a blue chip RB from Natchitoches died of heat stroke in 1989, La changed some of the rules
