Its fine if you max your benefits every year. Unfortunately a lot of the perks are still heavily geared toward business travel despite the changing remote landscape. It was hardly worth it at the previous price unless you traveled at least 25%.

The airport lounges alone save $100-$200 per layover.
I don't travel that much, internationally for pleasure 1x a year and 4-5 times at most domestically maybe 1-2 times for work and 3-4 for fun. But I don't see how a lounge is worth $100/ visit? What am I missing? Maybe for 2 people. I can get a couple of drinks and food anywhere I want in the airport for $50 for myself. And my options are endless.
I also don't understand having multiple cards for different things. If you are spending that much money, why do you give a shite about measly points?
If you rotate cards to get the bonus every 3-4 months, I can see that.

Yeah i always love dragging my arse over to D terminal and finding the hidden door to the hogwarts express tucked behind duty free only to get there and get told its an hour wait.

Yeah I don't value the lounges that high, but I guess I can see how someone does. I use a value of what I would spend so like you maybe $50 tops.

Haven't you asked something similar in a rewards thread on the money board? It's very easy to have multiple cards to earn a lot of points and to travel worldwide in business class and stay at luxury hotels. You likely wouldn't believe me if I told you to trips we've done, so I'm not going to even spend the time but it's very easy.

Getting multiple cards to get the sign up bonuses is just part of earning.

I’m about done with credit cards for personal use. The rewards are not worth it when merchants are charging 3% - 4% for the privilege of using the card.
I have an upcoming purchase of just under $10k that I wanted to earn points on my card. The merchant said there will be a 3.5% fee. It’s out of town so I told them I’d wire the money instead of paying $350 just to use a credit card.

What an absolute waste of money.

It’s the pay over time option but it’s only available for certain purchases. Not every purchase qualifies

Few months ago I went to the Centurion lounge in Atlanta and the wait was 40-50+, dad to join the digital waitlist through the app and it ended up being an hour wait.
Too many people have the card now.

Those credits don't do much for me. Frankly I have never understood the appeal or advantage of Amex so I have just never gotten one.
AMEX is meant for everyday business purchases and high income/wealthy people who pay the balance in full every month, no matter the balance. However, in recent years its been marketed to Gen Z just entering the workforce.
AMEX is great as there is no preset spending limit. Its an algorithm that tracks purchases and payoffs. It builds your credit limit month to month, and they are pretty lenient if you are a good cardholder. Some people have the means to spend 100 grand on a vacation when they normally spend 20 grand per month. They don't want to deal with a set limit. They value freedom.
The lounges disappoint me. Its way too crowded, and they need to raise the limits. It was $75K a year in spending to get in. I'm sure its the same now. Whatever it is they need to raise the spending limit.
Whenever I see an Amex card, I see someone who has their stuff together. It's a status symbol.

Personal plat doesn't allow to carry a balance.
Posted on 9/23/25 at 3:47 pm to HoustonGumbeauxGuy
Other than street cred, what does having an AMEX card provide you?

I'd rather spend that for a slight buzz at an airport bar pretty much any day.

I got rid of mine a few months back. I was getting the value in the monthly digital media credit and the lounge access when traveling with the family, but ended up getting the United card that has lounge access with a lot more regions covered, and $695 no longer made sense.
Now it’s just a fancy paperweight. $895 is bananas
