America’s Most Prolific Logger Recasts Itself as Environmental Do-Gooder

Weyerhaeuser uses new climate math to court green investors, while cutting down as many trees as ever

KIBBY TOWNSHIP, Maine—Weyerhaeuser Co. WY 1.42%increase; green up pointing triangle has cut down more trees than any other American company since its founder started logging before the Civil War. Environmentalists have long treated it as an enemy. Now, the new math of carbon emissions is enabling the lumber producer to cast itself as something quite different: a force for environmental good.
Its 10.6 million acres of U.S. timberland act as a giant sponge for carbon dioxide, which Weyerhaeuser says more than compensates for the greenhouse gases it emits by felling trees, sawing them into lumber and distributing wood products.
Although Weyerhaeuser is cutting down as many trees as ever and plans to increase lumber production 5% in the next few years, it says its net carbon footprint is negative—so much so that it is offering carbon dioxide storage capacity to other companies. Weyerhaeuser expects a new unit dedicated to helping other firms offset their emissions to generate $100 million a year in profit by the end of 2025.
quote:
“I don’t think there are many companies in the world with a better environmental story than Weyerhaeuser,” said Devin Stockfish, chief executive officer of the Seattle-based company. “The moment is really ripe for us.”

Ask any hunter what produces more bio diverse land.
Cyclic logging is a good thing.

Trees are a renewable resource.
Now, this carbon credit crap is a scam.
Responsible forestry is good business for the lumber company and good for the land also.

Deep in an old growth forest is a beautiful thing. We don't need to cut down all the old trees.
I am not against logging, just really like strolling through some old growth hardwoods

Logging is definitely needed and the industry leads to more trees being planted than any other industry, but bio diverse can be misleading.
Most of the trees planted for logging are pine trees and that leads to less diverse plantlife compared to natural forests.

I said cyclic. Not tree farming.

True enough. The carbon credit scheme is the scam. Another way for people like John Kerry to grift.
quote:
Corporate executives and scientists who have criticized the carbon-offset market say the offsets sold by timberland owners allow other companies to pay a relatively small price to avoid reducing their own emissions. They also say forest-preservation pacts that produce offsets often don’t substantially change logging practices, which means they essentially pay timberland owners for behaving as they would anyway. Lately, potential buyers have begun demanding that offsets represent actual reductions in planned tree-cutting, and sellers want higher prices to justify lost logging income. Deal-making has slowed.

What’s that?

Carbon credits are a scam, but if you buy into climate change and carbon credits, especially wrt to sequestration, the 2 best ways we have to sequester carbon are logging and plastic.

I own property in MS. I am paid to let it run wild for a number of years. I am then paid by loggers. And then it repeats itself.
No pine plantation.
Just growth and then slash.
We do the same thing with a small piece here in louisiana. We just don't get paid by the feds for it.

I know our nation is screwed because environmentalists keep paper bags from being preferred over plastic

The lumber industry is all in on “captured carbon” in trees. Especially if that lumber is never burned.
We have reached near peak insanity.

May I ask, what program this is under? Or company? I’m very interested to know

What program pays you to grow it wild (natural regeneration?)
Very interested because I have land like that in MS.

Oh yeah…deer and squirrels loooooove the delicious, nutritious taste of pine needles and pine cones.
Weyerhaeuser has wrecked the naturally nutritious old growth forests for shitty fricking pine trees. Deer especially are getting smaller around me specifically because of Weyerhaeuser wrecking the nutrients that once came naturally to forests.

So basically these baws are going to use "climate guilt" to pursuade companies to pay Weyerhaeuser to plant Weyerhaeuser trees for Weyerhauser to harvest?
Frickin' genius.

so was he assumed to be a bad person before because he was a logger? people need houses/toilet paper/land cleared

the carbon capture is "permanent belowground carbon capture and sequestration"

This. A "big" doe is about 120 lbs. in MS.
My buddies around here (S. LA) are killing does in the 140—150 range.
