Even the elephant knows how dangerous liberal white women are.

I once found myself in a vehicle between a mother elephant and her… cub? in South Africa. It’s an incredibly humbling experience to know in that moment that the only reason you’re still unharmed is because an animal chose not to attack you.

Large African reserves are truly incredible to experience, but people treat them like zoos instead of the wild areas they are. I have all the sympathy in the world for the woman and her family, but when an elephant starts to charge you, don’t just sit there and hope for the best. Sit down, put on your seatbelt, and then hope for the best, prepared for the worst.

I missed the Orca incident.

Reminds me of the woman (S.C?) whose last words before being taken by a gator were " I guess I won't do this again".

Nature and wild animals don't play. No matter how many cute animal vids you see on YouTube.

Just got back from a bucket list trip to S. Africa (Cape Town and Sabi-Sands), Botswana for Chobe, and Vicotria Falls in Zimbabwe. The amount of wildlife we saw was nothing short of amazing and the experience has me itching to go back. S Africa was awesome.

Sabi-Sands is a private game reserve near Kruger. Our last day there, the tracker and ranger took us for a walking safari and we got to within 10-15' of this beauty. He did come towards us a bit aggressively here and there was definitely a second of "oh shite"

It’s time for common sense elephant trunk control

Took this on safari. Having them bow up on you makes you a little nervous. I guess the guys had no where to move the vehicle in the traffic jam in the OP's case.

Yeah, I don’t suggest people go out of their way to find them, but moments of true powerlessness are a hell of a thing

I’ve done almost this same trip and although it was 17 years ago.. I think about often.

It truly was a magical place. I wish everyone could go and experience all of that.

On some of my bad days in my mind, I transport back to riding a rickety overlander across the Zimbabwean bush and somehow it’s all okay

The attack was captured in a harrowing cellphone video. The clip, shot by tourists, begins inside an open safari vehicle during the game drive.

We've been missing it nearly every day since we got back. We're planning other safaris already.

Zambia elephants were poached from >200k to less than 20k by the early '90s, They've recovered remarkably since then to well over 40k, in part because of the reopening of hunting of other animals which funds game scouts and other conservation forces. But let me tell you first hand, the ones that are left have a BAD attitude. As in, if you're tromping around the bush in elephant country in Zambia, it's not if you'll have a run in with elephants- it's when. Been there, done that on a safari on the Luangwa river, and it's no joke. Those are some belligerent pachyderms. I'm surprised the photo safaris don't get crushed more often. Whether memory or training, they are not friendly to humans and are not to be trifled with. The ele in Zimbabwe aren't ready for the petting zoo either.

This doesn’t seem too smart, but what do I know? I am glad you lived to tell the story.

There’s a recent video showing a “handler” get trampled to death at a riding park

Brutal. Just keeps stepping on him to crunch every bone in his body, looks like dude even tries to hold himself up with his arm after his back and pelvis are smashed to nothing

Sounds like a road rage incident. She probably flipped that elephant off 35 years ago.
