The bones had been found in 1940 yet initially assumed to be male. But a new analysis of the results from the remains – the bones themselves having disappeared – suggested their measurements were female

Mighty presumptuous of those bigot bones.

The image was taken about 100 miles from Howland Island, halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, were expected to land there in July 1937 for a refueling stop in her bid to be the first female pilot to circumnavigate the globe

How were they supposed to land, refuel, and take off again from an uninhabited island with no airstrip? And no refueling station?

A runway and refueling station was built and placed there specifically for her.

To an absolutely gentle horizontal landing on the ocean floor.

In outings that lasted 36 hours each, the unmanned submersible scanned 5,200 square miles of ocean floor. About 30 days in, it had captured a fuzzy sonar image of an object the size and shape of an airplane resting some 5,000 meters underwater within 100 miles of Howland Island. But the team didn’t discover the image in the drone’s data until about 90 days into the trip. By then, it wasn’t practical to turn back, Romeo said.

5,200 square miles is a huge area for an AUV side scan sonar search. The sonar image appears to be from a 100 kHz unit flying perhaps 100 meters above the seafloor. That would be one way to search a large area relatively quickly, keeping in mind that boat charter time, excluding the scientific crew and equipment, is a large expense.

They're using a Kongsberg Hugin AUV, a more than capable deep sea autonomously operated vehicle. Assuming they have funding, it would be trivial to equip it with a camera and dive on the sonar target to obtain photographic evidence.

Finding Earhart's plane has been the mysterious holy grail of more than one explorer, several of them very well funded. The isn't the first mission to try, won't be the last to fail if it comes to that.

Going from the image's poor quality and outline profile, color me skeptical.

Imagine being on the crew that got assigned to this arse duty. Living in the middle of nowhere jungle and building this and waiting on her arrival. And she crashes…..

they just needed a decent level spot of ground as runway and fuel barrels to refuel her plane
