Damn. I always buy early and sit smack dab in the middle of the theater. Guess I’m fricked.

I miss the old mall theaters, 4 screen cinemas, and the like. Getting your feet stuck to the floor was part of the experience.
Those were a thing of the past once the 16 screen megaplexes went up. Alamo Drafthouse is a nice compromise. Fewer screens, less of a crowd, comfy seats, and people serving food and drink.

Theaters will soon be a thing of the past. Most aren’t making it back from Covid shutdowns.
Our theater was shuttered during Covid and has t reopened. The town is currently renovating it and adding a bar and upscaling the food. It’s only a two screen but it will be awesome to have it back. My town supports local businesses so no doubt that it will survive.

It's AMAZING how some industries continue to shoot themselves in the foot.
Strugglig to get customers into the movie theater? Let's make it more expensive and more complicated to do so!

We went to the movies occasionally when the kids were younger to see the latest Pixar or whatever film. Otherwise we haven't gone in many years.
There's really nothing compelling enough to go spend $60 to see anymore. I think the last movie my wife and I went to see without kids was The Departed.

Pacer was a good car.
Seated five as I recall.
Looked like a fish tank from outside.

This is the way they need to go. Class them up, improve the seats, price out the riff-raff, and make it a worthwhile experience again.

Exactly. However, I would pay a little extra to bring real nachos back. Not the ones where the cheese comes in a cup.

I can't think of a reason to go to the theater.

There was a movie theater in the Canal Place center with the Saks down on Canal St.
Each theater had like 20 seats. Full reclining like could almost lay back. Luxurious velvet. Had a big swiveling tray.
You would press a button at your seat and a waiter would come slinking over. You could order from like a full menu of great food and full bar options.
Could literally sit there and eat a steak and crush a bottle of wine and watch a movie.
Honestly the best cinematic experience I’ve ever had.
A ticket was fairly expensive but well worth it.
I would gladly do it again.

It’s rare a movie comes out that I feel compelled to go to the movies to watch. They just don’t make many good movies now.

Yes
Ticket sales keep the lights on. Concession sales per capita are what pay the bills unless the industry has changed.

Sounds like they're trying the airline approach. I don't know enough about the movie business to guess whether it will work or not, but I'd suggest they take more of the airline pricing structure if they want to do it right. Seat preference is just a small part of the model. You can find all kinds of ways to generate additional revenue (or simply fill the seats) with a dynamic pricing structure. Airlines, hotels, and multi family apartments have been doing it for years.

AMC is why I stopped going to movies. They succeeded in ruining it even before the woke stuff took over.
Anyone remember when you bought a ticket, went inside, and sat down? You know, back when it was easy?
AMC bought up all the theaters and jacked the prices.

We are lucky that we don’t have riff raft in our town.

If I really want to see a movie, I just drive across the state line and go to the drive-in.

Other than kids movies. Top Gun is the only movie that I saw in the theater since 2019.

Streaming and big screen home theatre set ups have really killed the movies.
Back in the day it was a great experience to go tool around the mall for a couple of hours and then hit the movies. If you missed a big release you had to wait a year for it to show up at the video store. Plus it didn’t cost a fortune.

Will now be based on seat location. Sounds like a reason for more people to just stay home and stream.
I think AMC is trying to find niche model to stay in business. They even started a movie ticket subscription plan for certain movies to try to go after the pay one price of entertainment instead of purchasing individual daily tickets. The movie to premium viewing seating is to make sure the individuals that are paying more get the better seats, but if the recent experience of someone that I know that went to the movies recently, there certainly is still no demand for tickets where pricing this way would make sense. There were only 3 people in a theater for 200 people.

There are many theater chains who have been doing this for a very long time.
