Absolutely. However, only ~60% of US electrical production is via fossil fuels. Even it is were 100% FF it would still take less FFs burned to move a given ICE car 100 miles than the analog EV since the generation of electricity is a far more efficient method of producing energy than an ICE. Add to that the fact that EVs have regenerative braking and recoup power that normally becomes heat in an ICE. EVs are simply more efficient no matter what fuel source is used to drive the generators.

He should invest in SpaceX. Get us to Mars and mine us some of that sweet turbinium.

I got a question---are electric vehicles really better for the environment?
Aren't we using hydrocarbons to make the electricity? and don't we lose electricity as we transport it?

So if the grid was run off of renewables electric cars would be more beneficial. But still, charging a battery off from energy from a natural gas plant is still better than your traditional car.
Also, centralizing the production will likely increase overall efficiency and could provide for better sequestration options. Not sure why this still gets people riled up. *buhmuhvroomvroom*

And they're fricking torque-monsters.

I don't understand why some people are so threatened by electric cars.

How much electricity is lost in transmission??

Well, the logical and easily arrived at answer is that the rise in electric vehicle usage would also coincide with growth in clean or renewable energy.
Some of you are pretty funny. It's like you melt about anything that isn't bad for the environment. Very odd.

I addressed the first part a couple of posts up from yours.
The average loss of electricity in transmission from plant to consumer is roughly 10%. That obviously varies depending on how far you are from high voltage lines and mid voltage transformers. But the process of producing work via electric motors is still more efficient than ICEs which really aren't very efficient.
There are a lot of other small variable energy losses from the power plant making the wheels turn on an EV. Most of them are rounding error level.

Of course they are worse

As well as the energy involved in mining the lithium, constructing the battery, and shipping it to a manufacturing plant.
So a traditional car doesn't require any manufacturing? And the thousands of gallons of gas that will burn through them doesn't require any manufacturing? You're building a very poorly constructed strawman.

Latest EIA estimates put the number around 5-6 percent for transmission and distribution.

You say this based off of what knowledge? Do tell.

Power plants, solar panels, concentrating solar, wind farms, etc all providing more kWh per Btu than internal combustion engines.

I haven't suggested that traditional vehicles emit less than electric vehicles, I'm just saying that the manufacturing elements, particularly of lithium, are more intensive than a regular combustion engine. I don't know the total numbers for a lifetime for either one.
I'm good, though. I use biodiesel on my 300D
