All that due diligence on choosing a location(s) only to have local politics to blow it up.

Amazon says it will not build a headquarters in New York following mounting opposition, the company said in a statement Thursday.
Amazon said it does not have plans to reopen the search for a replacement location. The company will continue to build its planned headquarters in Virginia and its other planned location in Nashville.
Last week, The Washington Post first reported that Amazon executives were considering backing out of its plans to build an office in New York City. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had warned at a news conference last week following the report that the local and regional leaders would have to answer to voters if Amazon did not ultimately bring its 25,000 jobs to the state.
Local and state leaders had voiced significant opposition after New York City and state had offered the company performance-based incentives amounting to nearly $3 billion. These leaders were not privy to the details of the deal until after Amazon had made its decision.

Baton Rouge Metro Council would never dare to do the same.

I don’t think it’s as simple as it seems to us.

11 minutes sooner and you would have had it.

$3B in subsidies to one of the richest companies in the world does seem excessive... Hopefully this will tamp down the arms race going on between municipalities to attract companies bringing it to more sensible terms.

No way Cuomo and Bezos, True Believers in Progressive Politics as they are, don’t work this out. They need each other for all those cries of racistsexisthomophobe (!!!!!) to resonate.

quote:don't think you understand the big picture. Bezos may talk like a progressive, but he's still a capitalist. Theses marxists/communists hate capitalism. That is the fight here. Amazon is the epitome of modern capitalism. Progressives don't want the slightest hint of anything about amazon around them.

She's refusing to comment. Told a reporter she will tweet about it later.

That is true enough, but Cuomo is talking out of both sides of his mouth. He needs the Capitalist dollar to be able to continue to demagogue about the joy of Socialism. As it is, NY is unable to sustain the devastation to their tax base from people fleeing the state. So Cuomo needs Amazon to give the illusion that NY is prosperous and that the Socialist True Believer Dream is still alive.

This was the prevailing concern years ago when Alabama lured the Mercedes plant. Many people complained that the state had given away the farm. Looking back on it now, that plant has paid dividends for Alabama that couldn't even have been imagined back then. The idea of not getting that plant to locate now seems unthinkable.

I heard a report that the properties sold in Long Island City in January 2019 were something like 95 (or so) and in January 2018 were maybe 10-15.
Some folks are now holding some NYC real estate that was booming for a few months, and now the bottom will drop out.

This is spot on. I can’t wait to move out of NYC. Summer 2020 can’t get here soon enough.

Lived there for a little over a year just before 9/11. It's definitely not for everyone.

No one should be starting a business in that state anyways

NY has the second highest number of residents who left the state last year. Louisiana is the 4th highest. Seven states lost residents last year.
