re: Amazon mandates five days a week in office starting next year

Go to an office building that’s mostly empty and sit on Teams calls with colleagues / clients around the world.
Patently stupid, but we all know this is really about control. Which is silly because Amazon almost certainly has “productivity” software on every company issued laptop.

Depending on what I'm working on I'll often have two or three day periods where I'm just reading through specs and waiting on vendor responses. Perfect for at home work.
Do we work together?

Glad to know everyone will spend the first three hours drinking coffee, pooping and visiting.

I feel like people who fight for working at home are lazier than those that actually show up. Just my opinion.
That is just you projecting.
I had the most productive year of my life the year I worked from home. Not just for work, but for things around my house and for exercise.
I miss it greatly.

An easy way for Amazon to get rid of some of the workforce without layoffs. Let the ones who don't like it go elsewhere
Exactly. Attrition without severance.

I really hope my company doesn't follow suit with Amazon. WFH two days per week really meets my needs and I get just as much work done.

These companies just don’t want entire buildings/campuses sitting empty anymore.

Nah, it's because you can't train new kids out of college in a WFH environment and most WFHs aren't doing the work required. If it was saving money and making companies more productive then they'd be sticking with it.

My job has been 3 days in office and 2 days at home since 2021. They just put out an “optional incentive” to come in on Mondays and you’ll get out early on Fridays.
Started going in because I know in a few months that shite won’t be optional anymore

Is this the thread where all the cry babies whine because they can't spend all day playing minecraft?
Basically. Lotta folks thought they were getting a pass and "its a new model". Nope, gotta get back to the shop y'all. Nobody wants to hear your excuses. Y'all think those of us in sales that get to work outside the office have it easy when in reality we are usually stuck in Atlanta or O'hare at 5pm on Friday just trying to get home.
Get back to the orifice my dudes and quit whining.

I make it a point to work less when I'm in the office. Just to prove a point. We are "3 in and 2 WFH". But I go in at 6:30 then head to the gym at 11:00 then leave to finish from home for the 3 I'm in the office. My primary complaints for being forced into the office is:
1 - There is no face to face meetings had in the office. Nobody even checks in to see if I'm there. They check door badges for the day and they don't really do that much.
2 - There isn't a good reason from a productivity standpoint offered by the company. Just feels like a control move.
3 - I spend 90 to 120 minutes driving and $12 to $15 in fuel a day that I drive in. And there isn't anything to necessitate me be in the office other than someone "said so".
4 - My job requires so much after hours work, that a requirement for me to be in the office seems like it should be accompanied by a "I am not required to work on my time from home" policy.
I'll drive to the office, but the results won't be a more productive day.

This is exactly what I do although it's colleagues and vendors. I go to the office 1-2 days per week most of the time.

t 40+ hours in an office 5 days a week is also not particularly necessary as well.
In their opinion it is. It is their company and if that is what they want and you want to work there comply. If not quit and go somewhere else.

Odd response give then entirety of my post, but Ok. Gotta love all you dorks that need to be in the office 5 days a week posting during business hours. Definitely can't do that from home.

because these companies own/lease real estate.
In the last few years Amazon built a huge second headquarters in Arlington, they have to justify that.

Three days a week is plenty for culture. I think they are going to get a stark reminder regarding just how much people tend to grate on one another being around each other every work day

I don’t know that I would want permanent work from home, but a day or two a week works wonders for both my attitude as well as my productivity. Being able to focus on higher level tasks that require problem solving and creativity is a hell of a lot easier when I don’t have people asking questions all day.
I generally assume that anyone who doesn’t “understand” the productivity draw of WFH periods likely doesn’t do much, if any, higher level thinking as part of their job.

I'm no ardent WFH supporter by any means. I think it depends on the role, industry, individual and company. I also think there is some value in younger employees being around the SR folks in person, but I don't see my industry ever going back to 5 days in the office.
Remote work wasn't that uncommon for us before Covid. I have a few co-workers that I've worked with for 12-13 years that I've met like twice in person

Office culture is a myth. It's never what the higher ups think it is.
The first statement is incorrect. The second is debatable. Regardless, organizational culture benefits more from working on site than it does from employees working from home.
