DC area was always going to be a top 3 choice due to the multiple airports, educated, desirable workforce, and access to major public transit and the ability to expand/extend transit to link to a system that people actually use.
Only drawback is affordability concerns for all the employees you need that aren't going to make 200K plus (security, food service, housekeeping, maintenance guys, etc.).

Phew, ATL dodged that bullet.
For me in the Atl metro it is true. Because of the metro area, Georgia is becoming more and more a purple state. Add 50,000 new Amazon employees and you could easily see it tip the state blue for the next few decades.

I would have liked to see it go to a struggling city in the northeastern/mid Atlantic corridor that already has pedestrian and public transit infrastructure, such as Baltimore, Camden, or Trenton. Amazon would be completely transformative to their economy, and they are mostly cheaper than NYC or Boston but still near the major airports and universities.
Buffalo, Detroit, or Cleveland would also be cool. Detroit especially already has a great airport and solid universities in the area. Their downtown and mid town is really nice now and they are building a good rail-based public transit. Amazon would be huge for them.
DC meto is already a hot housing market with extremely clogged transportation arteries. It has a good public transit network and solid universities though.

50,000 employees would impact traffic in all surrounding areas even if Arlington can beef up their public transit.
Not a bad choice though.
I would just rather Amazon move to a city that was otherwise struggling.

Oh no it would still be a significant boost and believe me, people around Boston want it. I agree it wouldn't be AS significant, but it would be huge.
That being said, I don't think Boston gets it. They'll be on the short list, but the cost of living is going to be a tough hurdle.
I can promise you I won't be saying "Thank God Boston dodged that bullet!" though.

I'm just saying that while it's obvious that the current labor market and educational institutions who produce them were important, since all 20 are strong in both; I don't know how anyone can say that Bezos wouldn't care about cost of living when a number of finalists are midsize regions, that while still having the skilled labor market, they're much smaller than the large metros (naturally) but have a much lower cost of living (Raleigh-Durham, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Austin, Nashville, Columbus).
And one of the reasons they are opening the new HQ outside of Seattle is because the costs and the corresponding logistics of expansion. So like anything else, effective decision-making will rely on a number of variables, and weighing the costs and benefits if each and in relation to one another.
And since it's a business, it's ridiculous to just say they don't care about "costs," even if costs aren't as important as other businesses.

There is a 7:25am Delta flight out ATL to DCA. The entire flight is US Gov workers flying to DC but living in ATL because they get a pay bump. They all rent a condo/Airbnb it for 4 days. Fly back Thursday night. They work 4 ten hour days and have Fridays off. They do this so when they retire, they retire on DC pay but live in ATL or other cheap cities. Pretty insane and a bunch of BS if you ask me.

If someone goes through all that trouble every week and thinks it's worth it, more power to them. That sounds miserable to me
