I thought they were going to use the existing mall building but this sounds like they are going to demo and build new? Anyone have an idea on this?

The entire Cortana mall is 1.2 million square feet.

This Amazon fulfillment center is going to be 2.85 million square feet.

That's not really in the hood. It just has a run down mall on it. It's close to Broadmoor and Tara and some other decent neighborhoods.

I don't think we'll ever see a 20 story office building built at Airline and Winbourne though

There is a tall(ish) out of place building over around Florida somewhere back in there. It looks extremely dated and possibly empty but every time I drive by it I wonder what it was. Prolly not 20 floors though, maybe like 15.

2.895 million-square-foot warehouse, with a 45,000-square-foot office building, pump house and guard house.

Can anyone link to the Baton Rouge planning commission's site where I can see plans they filed?

I'm convinced that the 2.895 million square feet is a typo. That would easily make this one of Amazon's largest.

They have done several old malls around the country. They completely demo and start from scratch with exception of infrastructure, sub surface sewerage, utilities, etc...those they upgrade to accommodate. No way to retrofit an old mall with the automation they use. It would never be efficient.

Also this will expedite the additional lanes added to Airline Highway from the river to the parish line which is included in the MoveBR road package.

Here is what is gonna go down.

They aren’t just gonna hire good rats and will actually want half decent people.

Gravy will cry and call it racist because Amazon doesn’t want someone with 22 arrests working for them.

Curious, does anyone know how this going to affect traffic in the area? Is there any plans on additional infrastructure?

I don't know for sure, but I would imagine this would be a large priority for Amazon, especially a distribution center. I would imagine they wouldn't be interested in the deal without it.

This is a good thing and Dillard’s came to the table with a more reasonable expectation this time.

They built around one of the anchor stores of a mall they bought (and demolished) in Cleveland. But that was about 1/3rd the size of what they are planning at Cortana.

If the footprint of the building is as large as the Business Report said, Amazon definitely had to have the Dillards building. That's really a huge structure they are proposing.

Maybe the one off of Wooddale? I remember when some disgruntled employee or angry spouse went and shot that place up in maybe the 80s. No clue what's there now.

Also they have another facility going up in Port Allen off 415 which is rather large.

More good news.

I honestly couldn't think of a better outcome for an abandoned mall adjacent to a sketchy neighborhood than e-commerce. There will be 1,000+ jobs with health benefits that won't require a college degree.

If you do your research on Amazon you will find they are very accommodating regarding employment. They are used to this and run a very well oiled ship and people tend to really like working for them. They hire a lot of retired people seasonally as well.

This

You need major gentrification and and influx of Immigrants who are there to help build the community, like St.Louis got with the Bosnians to revitalize a large area.

They saved Part of the South Suburbs from the slow death of shitheads moving in. They pushed them back North, and revitalized South City, and became part of community.

He should STFU. There is about to be 1,000 new jobs in Baton Rouge that many of the people he claims to care about will fill.

Don't ruin that.

True.

The intersection of two major highways, proximity to the airport, and the recent effort to widen Airline Highway actually makes that a good spot. The infrastructure is mostly already there.

Again?

I won’t believe jack shite until Dillards officially signs on the dotted line. Because last time around, this was presented as a done deal without Dillard’s involvement and then they tried to force Dillard’s to sell.

It appears to be a fine deal and Dillard’s is on board.
