Amazon is raising its minimum wage to $15 an hour for all US employees.

The change takes effect November 1 and applies to full-time, part-time and temporary workers. Amazon (AMZN) says the $15 minimum wage will benefit more than 250,000 Amazon employees, plus 100,000 seasonal workers.

"We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon's founder and CEO. "We're excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us."

Amazon also said its public policy team will begin lobbying for an increase in the federal minimum wage, which has been $7.25 an hour since 2009.

Well, would you look at that. Didn't need the govt to force them to do it. They did it all by themselves.

Amazing huh?

They can do what they want, but I hate that they chose that arbitrary $15 number that the protesters came up with.

All this does is fuel the fire for others.

Pay your people what you want, but keep your nose out of what other companies do. Is that too hard a concept?

This is a good article about their seasonal force I read a couple years ago or so. Pretty interesting and I’ve met a few older people that actually are on this circuit. Kind of sad or bittersweet.

No crap, why not 14, or double the minimum at 14.50.

He’s probably replacing at least half of those employees with automated and robotic solutions.

Exactly. I have zero issues with a private company deciding to do this on their own.

That is where the prime increase went. He isn’t paying them... your extra $20 a year is.

I am all for companies doing what is best for their business model. However, let’s not kid ourselves that this is a philanthropic give. Doing this will squeeze the labor market tighter in the geographic areas. It will cause small companies to have to raise wages to compete. That will thereby increase costs which get passed along to the consumer.

Future news story, circa 2019:

In other news, Amazon has figured out they can function just as well with a 33% less in their workforce. They claim greater efficiency and automation.

Wage hikes rarely are reflected in price. They are generally offset by fewer workers or drastic reductions in hours worked.
