Amazon Alexa is a “colossal failure,” on pace to lose $10 billion this year

Amazon is going through the biggest layoffs in the company's history right now, with a plan to eliminate some 10,000 jobs. One of the areas hit hardest is the Amazon Alexa voice assistant unit, which is apparently falling out of favor at the e-commerce giant. That's according to a report from Business Insider, which details "the swift downfall of the voice assistant and Amazon's larger hardware division."
Alexa has been around for 10 years and has been a trailblazing voice assistant that was copied quite a bit by Google and Apple. Alexa never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream, though, so Alexa doesn't really make any money. The Alexa division is part of the "Worldwide Digital" group along with Amazon Prime video, and Business Insider says that division lost $3 billion in just the first quarter of 2022, with "the vast majority" of the losses blamed on Alexa. That is apparently double the losses of any other division, and the report says the hardware team is on pace to lose $10 billion this year. It sounds like Amazon is tired of burning through all that cash.
A division in crisis
The BI report spoke with "a dozen current and former employees on the company's hardware team," who described "a division in crisis." Just about every plan to monetize Alexa has failed, with one former employee calling Alexa "a colossal failure of imagination," and "a wasted opportunity." This month's layoffs are the end result of years of trying to turn things around. Alexa was given a huge runway at the company, back when it was reportedly the "pet project" of former CEO Jeff Bezos. An all-hands crisis meeting took place in 2019 to try to turn the monetization problem around, but that was fruitless. By late 2019, Alexa saw a hiring freeze, and Bezos started to lose interest in the project around 2020. Of course, Amazon now has an entirely new CEO, Andy Jassy, who apparently isn't as interested in protecting Alexa.
The report says that while Alexa's Echo line is among the "best-selling items on Amazon, most of the devices sold at cost." One internal document described the business model by saying, "We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices."

Well yeah, they offered them constantly for 20 bucks or even free. We have 6 of them and didn't pay full price for any.

We had one that came free with our TV we bought a couple years ago. I think it’s pretty much turned into a digital picture frame that I sometimes ask what the weather is outside.

Alexa is a great example of a first world unnecessary technology
“Alexa.. turn on the sink !”
Like fricks sake just get your arse up and turn the water on
I have a friend who we made fun of mercilessly because they were buying these smart blinds that you could open and close with your smartphone or Alexa . So damn unnecessary.
I have zero desire to ever use Alexa
Oh and the fact that it is absolutely recording everything you say around it even when not being addressed as Alexa .

Alexa is becoming a panhandler. “I can perform that task if you’d like to sign up for…would you like to start your free trial?”

I have gotten Alexa devices twice as gifts. Both are in the closet in their original packaging. Never set them up and I won’t.
Figured my phone spies on me enough. I don’t need even more devices to invade my privacy.

Amazon’s electronics are cheap and horrible quality. They’re practically disposable after a year or less.

We have a bunch of Google ones in our house that always seem to kick on randomly thinking we are asking it a question.
On the off chance I do try and ask it a question, it never gets the answer right.
Me: Ok Google, what's the weather today?
Google: Weather is a term that originated in....

I don't use Alexa ever...for anything.

That is, and has ALWAYS been it's primary purpose. It is listening to everything you say and, at best, is using that information to try to steer your purchases. At worst, it is collecting information for far more nefarious purposes

We use ours for two things.
Music and controlling my saltwater aquarium stuff.
Got a kasa power strip that works with Alexa and I use it to control timers, etc for the aquarium and use the Alexa part to cut things on and off when I have my hands full doing water changes etc.

Yeah, it' bad enough Apple can track your exact location, what you say over a phone, what you text, what you browse. Oh wait, they're not suppose to do that.

We have multiple Alexa devices and mostly they are just bluetooth speakers that we occasionally use as a kitchen timer and a weather update device.

Alexa is good for quick, lazy things like converting grams to ounces or giving you a weather report, but she is really dumb when you ask something even a little complex.
