Political stuff aside, Barrymore hasn't busted herself up to the point she looks like a homeless hag or a whale, and isn't having public meltdowns or mental episodes. Which is surprising considering how she was when she was a kid.

I don't know the first thing about this woman, but her "episode" sounds like classic bipolar mania. People with mania can get pretty wild. Up for days with no sleep and they often become delusional and psychotic. Almost never are manic people dangerous, but their behavior becomes increasingly bizarre and dangerous for themselves. For instance, they can spend themselves into debt, have sex with random people, get into accidents, say really stupid and embarrassing shite, and cause other problems they will regret later. Typically full blown mania requires hospitalization as the episode can go on for weeks/months unless they are shot-up with antipsychotics which usually stops the episode. When the manic person "comes down" they are totally normal and often embarrassed.
An onlooker will probably assume drugs, but I can assure you they do this stone cold sober. Most bipolar people are alcoholics, but it's not the alcohol or drugs that cause the behavior.
The good news is that bipolar mania is easily controlled with medications. If a person is on a med like Lithium, they will rarely, if ever, have another episode.
EDIT: Just checked and Bynes herself said she was diagnosed with bipolar. Damn, I'm good.

I love how comments that basically mirror said sexually abusive behavior are intertwined with those commenting on how it screws the young ones up. But yeah, it is just a Hollywood problem.
