Not sure why you are getting slammed, I think I have heard the term before but definitely didn’t know the date or the reason it was celebrated.

I honestly don't recall hearing about it. It's definitely possible I heard about it before, but obviously it's not something I remembered if I did because I didn't hear much about it again if I did hear or read about it.

if you're an adult man that's never heard of juneteenth, you're either woefully unintelligent or the public school system failed you

when I was a kid in houston in the 90's, my black classmates talked about it every year. concerts, cookouts, etc were always taking place that weekend.

It was big in Texas where you grew up because it started there, Einstein.

Juneteenth is another made up holiday only about a dozen people celebrate like Kwanza but now the media is acting like everyone nation wide celebrates it.

There is a 50/50 chance though that we'll have off for that day next year though. So there's that.

Why do you people care?

I’m white but is it wrong for black people in this country to celebrate the emancipation of slaves?

The ending of slavery no matter where it is is a good thing.

Except the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in this county only in confederate controlled states. Juneteenth 1865 is the day that the Emancipation reached Texas to free them there but it did not free all slaves in the country. It was not until December 13 1865 when the 13th amendment became part of the Constitution that slavery was abolished in this country. In fact some states after the Civil War, including Kentucky still had not ended slavery and were trading and using them until December 1865.

Yeah, me too. It was even mentioned a little in my history classes growing up. Guess that's because we were so close to Galveston.

My parents anniversary was on June 20th. My dad used to say, jokingly, that they tried to get the church on Juneteenth for their wedding, but it wasn't available.

Talking about Juneteenth. Does this mean that July 4th is racist?

I would think no way the opressed would ever celebrate such a holiday.
